Always a little bit of a line at Giapo apparently. We waited about 20 mins to get our tasting experience, but afterwards the actual Ice cream was out in just a minute after ordering. They take you through a tasting of all their Ice cream flavours, and explain the different types of ice cream you can get, from handmade waffle cones to doughnuts and sourdough.
Really appreciated the vegan and gluten free options available.
The price is a little high when you consider just the ice cream, but the entire experience is well worth it. And of course it tasted great.
Definitely worth a visit, even if just once for the experience.

We enjoyed our visit & the experience, but did find the ice creams quite expensive at $40 for 2 ice creams. You have a short explanation of Giapo & you get to try all the ice cream flavours upon arrival. We were required to queue outside for around 10 minutes on arrival, so it is relatively busy. Our ice creams were both ordered at the same time, but I was halfway through mine before my husbands arrived, and it would have been better if they were presented to us at the same time. We also found that quite a few people were entering through the exit in an attempt to skip the queue.
Would recommend to people visiting Auckland for the novelty, but probably wouldn't revisit due to the prices.

For our first visit here, the employee brought us over to a table and explained the different types of ice cream options we had. She also provided us a small sample of each flavor which was very helpful. Unfortunately, she had a very quiet voice so we could not understand everything she told us. We decided to split a waffle cone with two flavors of ice cream ($13.50NZ). What we didn’t understand was that different toppings were also included with each flavor. Since we chose two flavors, they gave us the toppings of the top scoop of ice cream which did work out fine for us. We really enjoyed the peanut butter and dark chocolate flavors. This is a very small place and most likely you will need to eat your ice cream outside.

I give this 5 stars because it is truly a unique place to go to. It is a true experience. You start with waiting in line, maybe for 20-30min for a private tasting of their 9 flavors where they also go over all of their unique cones etc..... at which point you order and eat :). The flavors are unqiue but the cones are just crazy what they have. I will say they are almost too much for 1 person and for sure not a place I would go to multiple times. It is quite pricey for ice cream as well but to do once, absolutely. Finally, there is nothing small for the kiddos so something to keep in mind, it is almost an adults ice cream place

The staff are amazing as is the ice cream experience. When you are waiting in line they offer delicious chocolate samples and then you get to sample all the flavour of gelato before choosing an extravagant creation. My favourite is the sourdough donut with the peanut butter flavour. Highly recommend!

Giapo is the best ice cream I've ever had.. you get to try the flavour first to see if you like it... I find the ice cream to full me up.. it's amazing the way they create them in to different shapes etc. The owner I got to meet once and he is lovely. I miss seeing how they were created in the old shop but never the less a must go and get!

I had selfie frame cone ice cream with “kiss” flavor which has rich chocolate taste. The staff explained the selections of cones and ice creams very friendly, and even we could try some of the flavors before making the order. Definitely recommend to try this unique ice cream out here!

Not cheap but still excellent this is wonderful ice cream. After queuing to get in, as they only allow a few people in at a time, you have the different ways of serving explained followed by sample tasting of the ice cream currently available. Basically you are spoiled for choice.

Most of the offerings here are not ice cream being some sort of vegan concoction. The gelato flavour we tried was poor quality and for some strange reason half coated in chocolate? The waffle cones are too sugary and overpowering. If you love honest well balanced food made with integrity and grounded in the wonderful ice cream tradition then give this one a miss.

Thank you once again Giapo and Annarosa. We've been coming to Giapo's every year on the study abroad program we run. It never ceases to be an absolute highlight of our trip...students talk about Giapo years later and tell everyone in Ohio about the gelato and the experience. Yesterday Giapo accommodated our group with grace, kindness, and his usual generosity. We were served by Annarosa who was run off her feet by hungry students, but never stopped smiling. The people here as beautiful as the gelato. Grazie!

Giapo is recommended as a must-see spot in Auckland. It’s a funky little downtown nook, the inside smells like warm chocolate, and the ice cream options are very unique. If it’s your first time, the host will greet you and let you sample all their interesting flavours before you make your choice. We went twice in the afternoon and never had a huge wait time, maybe five minutes each time.
It’s very cool and definitely worth a trip if you’re in the area. In my opinion it’s a bit overpriced for what you get, though. Also IMPORTANT NOTE: they do not accept cash.

This place takes ice cream to whole new level! Maybe it’s not really for everyone who is looking for a quick fix on a hot summer day like you would for cheap McDonalds soft serve but there is so much more to it!
The art, creativity and technology involved are what made this place so special and also that comes through to the flavours you taste that are made with proud quality New Zealand produce.
I took my friends from Perth there to try it out and they were utterly mind blown! One of them is a chocoholic. She ordered Cher’s chocolate flavour (infamously named after the world-class singer who apparently got obsessed with this ice cream since she last visited there). My dear, sweet friend gave me the look after she had the first bite of it that expression that she was so in awe. It was such a precious memory we shared just having ice creams!
My favourite item has to be the selfie cone! Can you imagine an ice cream that enables you to go on with the current trend shamelessly?
There is one made just for that!(also the entire piece is completely edible whether to eat there now or takeaway for later is up to your judgment).
What impressed me even more is also the customer service and the friendliness that their staff made you feel. They take so much pride in what they do with kindness to share special experiences if you request for a little glimpse in their back kitchen when they it’s not too busy they will welcome you with a smile! The staff named Umasha made my friends feel like VIPs when they got to see a bit the back operation!
Overall, I’m super happy to put this as highlight on my friends itinerary of what Auckland has to offer.
My advice is to order an array special items and share because they could be quite heavy but there are some small items available too if not keen on sharing.
If you are in Auckland and open for an opportunity to have fun, and to feel “enriched” physically and mentally you should not miss this place!

We visited Giapo this afternoon and we were delighted with the fantastic service and amazing choices of ice cream and cones on display.
We were greeted by Emma who took us through each flavour and then any modifications to suit us perfectly- I was extremely pleased with the attention to detail and how personable my experience was.
The ice cream was so delicious and the cone was a great idea to have it broken up in a tray, mess free and easy to eat.
Great experience overall, thank you Giapo!

I love going to Giapo. The ice cream is awesome with heaps of vegan options. The flavors change often and it is a great place to take people home out of town when you want to impress them and my girlfriend loved going on a date there. The staff are always lovely and super happy to talk about ice cream and let you try the flavors. I rate this as one of the to things people should do when they come to New Zealand.

This is delicious gelato but $17 with a fancy cone is definitely overpriced. The ”experience” is just getting to taste the flavours before you pick one so that doesn’t explain the price either. Unsurprisingly everyone there was a tourist visiting for the first time, but when in Auckland...
