This place is great for if you are looking for a cheap feed that does decent food. The xiao long Bao is probably better at Shanghai street or new Shanghai but you can't go wrong with the 15 fried pork dumplings for $7.50, or the pan fried Shanghai style pork buns (Shen Jian Bao) which were $8.50.

The first thing we noticed about this restaurant was it appeared to be quite popular. Looking for a light meal before the Theatre we popped in and were lucky to secure a table. Within minutes they were lined up on the street to get in, a testament to the known quality I assumed. We were correct, the food was devine,... More

I had dinner with my friends at the restaurant and ordered several dishes, including seafood noodles. The portions were huge for the price we were paying ($8). The waiters doesn't even speak english and they tried to avoid you when you ask for something. A day after that I started feeling terrible and nauseous, with temperature, headache, etc. and I... Called in to the Empress for lunch before the Theatre. Could not fault the staff. Very attentive. Food was amazing. Hot and fresh. Didnt have to wait long either. Will definitely go back.

Were out with friends for a drink round the corner and decided to grab a quick meal in china town. Passed this restaurant and went in as it was busy. 3 of us went for set menu and 1 a la carte. The a la carte meal came 15 minutes before the set menu starters, chicken satay which no way... More

The food was quite bad and this is the first time we have left half a dish. One of the dishes ordered was called satay beef, I personally had one spoonful and couldn't eat any more. I doubt it as even beef, whatever it was had been soaked in some sort of salt brine. We had fried rice, which was... More

The food was okay but the service was pretty ordinary. We were shoved into a corner, so close to another table that we were touching elbows. Luckily the other guests could see the funny side of it too. The restaurant was very busy and it showed. They clearly wanted to get everyone in and out quickly. The plus side is... More

Dumplings were nice, also had lemon chicken and sweet n sour pork. Was a super cheap night out. Service wasn't great but didn't spoil our night. Would return.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
