We were in Chinatown on Chinese New Years Eve and most of the restaurants were closed. Chine on Paramount was busy (but there wasn't much choice). The food was average - but lacking in flavour.

The prawn toast were rather small portions but tasty. We ordered the chicken in pepper hot pot which whilst very nice felt more European than Asian and the beef in black bean whilst tender, lacked some flavour. Our waiter was excellent, pleasant, unobtrusive and we didn't have to wait very long between courses, but didn't feel rushed either.

We went here after checking into our hotel on a Sunday night as it was close by. We had sweet and sour pork which was average and chicken with cashew nuts which was bland. The service was quick and the waitress was always filling up the water glasses. It is right in Chinatown so might be worth a walk down... More

I had enjoyed a meal here in the past but was disappointed this time. As a single diner, I was given a table facing a wall next to the kitchen and toilets. My wine arrived promptly, but the meal took 30 minutes, during which time no-one made eye contact with me. I felt invisible and irrelevant. I won't be back.

I have been going here for years and never been disappointed. Looks and feels local, but if westernised Chinese food is your thing, this will work out fine. The staff has been the same since we started going there and they remember what we like as soon as we walk in the door, but willing to suggest some new menu... More

The staff were lovely and very attentive. We just ordered a selection of vegetable and meat dishes to feed four hungry teenagers that included one vegetarian. The beef dish was particularly good. The restaurant wasn't busy, which was a surprise for a Saturday night.

Started with dumplings sounded nice but were cold and there was only 10 people in restaurant. Next was chicken In plum sauce well I think there was chicken but no plum sauce just something that looked like it so tried rice but tasteless and 3 prawns in a large mmmm not good. They were more interested in tipping the wine... More

Great service but I have had better Chinese food. This restaurant is in the heart of Melbourne's China town so there's no shortage of quality restaurants to choose from. This restaurant has an extensive menu with lots of choices but the dishes were tasteless and over cooked. The decor suggested good things but sadly that was not to be. The... More

Around $10 a person, the food was ok but would not go back. No great flavors or value with many other choices in Chinatown.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
