I'm not that kind of person who likes to try different places all the time because a bad experience tends to spoil my night, for that reason usually me and my friends always go to the same places, but last week we decided to try something new, Ruyi came up in our reserch and after all the positive reviews, why not? With so many options on the menu, we wanted to try everythig, with the help from our lovely table host, we decided for the 5 course option. I just asked, if possible, the dishes not come too spice for me and also my friend is vegan. She arranged everything for us. When the food came out, it proofed was a right decion to leave everything to the chef. Every single dish was a surprice and all of them look like a piece of art, beautiful plated with delicious flavour. I think everybody should try their Bao Bao at least once in life. Really! I was amazed by all the dishes! I also really appreciated the warm service, the very accommodating place and the drinks I had, the fresh lychee spritzer and the the very unusual and flavoured Ginger Ginger. What a night! Me and my friends couldn't be more satisfied! We'll be back soon!

First time at Ruyi was very very good for me and my girlfriend! Starting with the good location. Its at the top end of CBD, close to our Collin street office, only few minutes walking distance. On arrival, we didn't know what to choose among so many options on the menu, so we were suggested by our table host to go with the 5 course "as you wish" set menu, which would serve us their best original dishes arrenged by the chef.. Ok! Sincerely, I think this was the best decision. All of them so unique in flavour. The handmade artisian tofu, the peking duck Bao Bao, Wonton Dumplings (I adore spice food). No words were to describe the caramelized chicken wings that we ordered a second serve before the main arrived. For the main, we had the Kong Bao Chicken. The mild spiciness highlighted the flavour to perfect. Everything was very well balanced. Tip: ask them about the Argentina Malbec. In my opion, a perfect match! Keep doing this good service guys!

Great atmosphere and delicious food. My girlfriend and I came here last week for dinner. Our favourites from the small dishes were the eggplant fries and peking duck bao bao. From the main courses we chose the slow cooked duck in master stock and the flavour was amazing. Service was warm and knowledgable, the staff helped us to pick the right amount of food and also helped us to find a bottle of delicious wine to match our food. The whole dining experience was very enjoyable and we had a great evening.

Dined at Ruyi with my family and my sister’s family which included 6 adults who chose the 8 course banquet and two children who ordered from the a la carte menu including main and two entrees to share. The children sat at one end of the table so as to make it easier for serving and separating the banquet to the a la carte items. We asked what was in the banquet and the staff politely refused to advise us but we decided to go with it. During our meal and not to our knowledge two of the kids’ entrees were placed in the middle of adults partaking in the banquet. No explanation was provided as to the entrees or who they were for and without knowledge of what was in the banquet we assumed they were part of it and consumed them. This later came to surface when we enquired where the kids’ meals were and advised they had been already brought out. We had to speak with the manager but she agreed the dishes were served incorrectly and brought out additional for our kids so a big thank you for that. My main issue with this restaurant was not the quality of the food or the service but the banquet. For $80pp you expect a decent feed which was not the case. Perhaps this is why Rock Paper Scissors and Hochi Mamma across the lane were both full with queues out into the lane and Ruyi was half empty. We all could have chosen a main and two entrees each from the a la carte menu for almost half the price. The entrée items (excluding the raw fish) included one food piece for each person and the three main dishes being fish, beef and chicken in terms of quantity was also very poor. There was only 4 pieces of fish between 6 people, a small amount of beef and chicken, both cut up into bite size pieces of which each person only got about 2 – 3 pieces. This isn’t really enough food and especially for a banquet. There are many great Asian restaurants in the CBD to enjoy banquets, unfortunately Ruyi is not one of them and I would not recommend it based on my experience there.

We dined at Ruyi this Friday and did the 8 course menu. Every single dish was wonderful. The beef was the favorite of ours and surprisingly also the tofu (which we would never usually order). The service was impeccable. The staff paid attention to little details, like a plant was hanging a little close to my husband's head, so they moved it. Another thing that they got right, that a lot of Melbourne restaurants don't, was the volume of music was low enough that we could have a conversation, rather than shouting at each other. All in all, bug thumbs up from us

So excited to try this place after reading reviews but overall it was a very disappointing experience. The starters came out quickly and were very tasty but there was a big delay for the last one which was ok until there was an even bigger delay for our main courses. It was over an hour after ordering despite the very small restaurant not being full and we were on the verge of walking out after asking about it a couple of times as it was becoming so late. When the mains did arrive the $59 beef had more mushrooms than beef, the chicken was super spicy and inedible for most of us (noted as mild) and the $15 fried rice came in the tiniest bowl (the same size portion as the $4 plain rice) and was just enough for 1 person. The attitude of staff changed completely when the issues were raised, our waitress turned rude and surly and just said she appreciated our feedback (it's a complaint, not feedback). The manager offered us a drink when our mains finally came out but not a sav blanc (which we had drank 2 bottles of), instead a new red wine, some bubbles then finally a glass of grigio (saying the sav had sold out). She disappeared after this so despite paying nearly 400 for 4 people we were left with an explanation or apology with our waitress, in fact we barely got a goodbye. I'm not sure what was going on in the kitchen but we are reasonable people and could have dealt with it or made a decision to leave the main courses if there had been some communication and some genuine apologies. Despite the great starters we will never be back.

Ruyi is nearby of my work place and I go very often for dinner with my partner after work, as we like the elegant set up, dim light and, of course, the delicous food. Last week was the first time we have tried lunch there . Without any surprise it was as good as dinner. In the day time the space becomes airy and bright. We had a sesonal lunch set. All my favourites dishes in there: Bao Bao, caramelized chicken wings and Caramelized Pork Ribs. A glass of Barossa Valley Shiraz was the perfect match to our food. We couldn't believe it only cost $35 for all of this. We realized that lunch service is faster than dinner. Think they have put offices people's time limition in mind, but the warmth and the thoughtfulness as good as dinner time. Ruyi now became my favourite place for lunch and dinner. Hey, guys! Don't be surprised if you always see me there!

My family and I had dinner at Ruyi on Saturday/Chinese New Year. It was our first time at the restaurant and we all loved it! We ordered a special New Year set menu (there were 2 to choose from) The food was absolutely delicious, it was very fresh and modern. The sauces/broths/dressings were much lighter and fresher than the usual chinese food. We were impressed with every dish we had ( 7 courses ). We also tried a few of their cocktails and loved all of them as well. Everyone of the members of staff were lovely and very attentive. We'll be going back and I highly recommend it to everyone.

We had the 5 course banquet. It was a wonderful blend of very tasty small plates. Initially we thought it might not be enough but we were more than satisfied. Shared a dessert to finish. Each dish was fresh with unique tastes. Very different from suburban Chinese restaurants as it felt light in the stomach rather than the heavy feeling normally experienced. Wine prices are quite high but that is not unusual these days. Service is excellent.

As being my favourite Restaurant, I try to go to Ruyi at least once a month. I've been to China twice and I have never tryed a Shao Long Bao so tasty and freshy as in there. The place, the food, the wine selection, the service, I like all. The staffs always helpful and attentive. A perfect place to go to relax, chat with friends and family. I have been t here in diferent occasions, with my friends, collegues, family... they all became Ruyi lover, and have their favourisism. My Mom always dying for the WA Steamed Barramundi. She's a fan of the special sauce. Couple of my friends love their ceviche. To be honest, you can pick anything from the menu, because nothing will go wrong. I have recently suggested them to have half bottle wines on their list. Hopefully to see that soon.

Our first night in Australia and we had one of our best meals for a very long time. We ordered the 7 course dégustation menu and it was amazing, thank you to a wonderful team with special thanks to the owner for taking so much trouble in explaining each course. We highly recommend you try this resto.

RUYI Last night was another excuse for dinner at a restaurant we hadn’t been to before so we headed for RuYi at 16 Liverpool Street (in the lane on the way to Longrain). RuYi describes itself as relaxed fine dining of modern Chinese cuisine. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our seats in the simply presented dining room that provides a comfortable atmosphere. The service was thoughtful and always beaming with a smile. You get the impression the team are proud of where they work. We opted for a range of the sharing plates and were not disappointed. The evening opened with what turned out to be an agreed choice of best dish, Fried Artisan Tofu with caramelised soy, fushion mayo and nori. The flavours were quite different but delicious. Perfectly steamed vegetarian dumplings followed, filled with bok choy, shitake and vermicelli. Closely following was the vegetarian lettuce cup filled with Shiitake mushrooms, celery, carrots and peas. The mushrooms were flavour-filled. The highly recommended, by the house, Bao Bao arrived at the table and looked picture perfect. Slightly toasted the bao was so soft and the filling had a zing that got the taste buds singing. We finished off with a great choice of the Soy Mustard cold noodle salad with shiitake, capsicum, peanuts, soy mustard and chilli. The cool refreshing tastes and textures of this dish just rounded out a delightful meal in the right way. A Lychee and Pomegranate Fizz Mocktail was also a welcome choice. RuYi is another welcome addition to dining before a show and I suggest it is well worth a visit. Good value for money, nice people and really tasty food with a range of flavours. I suggest you give it a try. PS – Wicked was our show for the evening, back in Melbourne after about 15 years, and it lived up to very high expectations. Great cast, unbelievably fantastic costumes and settings and wonderful story. Worth another look.

We enjoyed every dish - always a favourite are dumplings and Ruyi didn't disappoint with several options. I think every meal at Ruyi is very good; quality ingredients, fresh and tasty. Looking around at the plates of other patrons, everyone was enjoying their meal! Well paced serving and friendly staff. Thank you!

I'm a regular here and thought it was time to write a review... Ruyi has been my go-to for pre-show dinners with family for years, and it most certainly never disappoints. The menu has the best Chinese in Melbourne (from which I'd highly endorse the Bao Bao and fried rice) and the service is always quick and friendly. Really nice atmosphere and cosy spot which is still really accessible for Melbourne theatres. As a patron for years, I can attest to their consistently exceptional dining experience. Would highly reccomend....

From the moment, I walked into Ruyi I was looked after really well by the team who said it be a lovely table in the main dining room. Make sure you order the lettuce cups they are delicious and very generous serving. When they recommend 2 to 3 dishes for a single person probably only needed 2 but I’m glad I got to try a few different things. The eggplant chips were spicy, sweet and creamy perfect side. Lettuce cups were crisp and clean with excellent flavour. Will definitely return to try some more of the gluten-free options as it was all a lovely experience to be able to order so many dishes.

Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
