About
Mr Ramen San serves up some of Melbourne's best ramen, located in Mid City Arcade in the precinct of Chinatown. This is truly authentic Japanese ramen restaurant! Craving steaming flavour packed ramen? Head Chef Roystan Leow has been trained by Japanese maters in Ramen and has worked in high profile restaurants. According to Roystan, "What you get in Japan in terms of ramen, we produce here. Authenticity." Roystan brings the influences of Kyushu, a charming southern precinct of Japan to Melbourne. The Kyushu style is about pork bones in white broth, signature at Mr Ramen San. Mr Ramen San delights with a Japanese greeting as you enter, making customers feel welcome from the start. Mr Ramen San boasts several points of difference to the usual ramen scenario. For a start they serve up fresh house made Japanese style noodles daily; for ramen enthusiasts you can tell the quality of noodles and it makes a big difference. Not only that but unlike other ramen houses, Mr Ramen San will provide you with FREE extra noodles on request! The serves of noodles in the dishes are generous enough as it is; so extra noodles for free is a great innovation for hungry customers! Charsu Tonkatsu Ramen is a signature dish that rewards you with it's white cloudy broth; intense in flavour having been cooked for over 10 hours. As Ramen lovers know, it's all in the broth! There are no shortcuts in the cooking process (ie no soup stock from any supplier and definitely no MSG) and Roystan has a great passion for cooking authentic ramen. The Charsu roast pork is melt in your mouth, and the seasoned egg, wood ear mushroom and greens give a refreshing accompaniment. The World Loves Melbourne considers this dish the best ramen in Melbourne.

My husband ordered a tonkotsu chashu ramen and I ordered the gyoza for lunch. The ramen was excellent – the broth was very rich and porky and the toppings (soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots, nori, bean sprouts and spring onions) were super tasty. The gyoza were excellent too – super thin skins with a moist tasty filling.

I've been a regular here for years now. Best ramen outside of Ramen Street in Tokyo Station in my opinion. Proper ramen is my favorite, because I can't cook it myself.
Punch your details into the tablet out front and wait to be called. No bookings here. So peak busy times can have you waiting a while, but it's worth it.
Post Covid, you scan the QR code on the table and order on the website, although in typical Japanese fashion, the food comes out fast.
The spicy tonkotsu is my favorite (although friends have melted from tying mine). The pineapple flavored beer is amazing (don't knock it until you've tried it) and so are the pork gyoza. There is also a free half or full noodle refill per bowl. So don't eat all the good stuff straight away, save it for more noodles later. They really don't want you to leave hungry and I really love that about this place.

Delicious Ramen, had the Pork Char Siu with Spicy miso with pork gyoza. Both soft and perfectly cooked. Fresh and tasty broth. Price a bit high but I loved the food. Staff were friendly and service of food was quick.

We went there as usual and we ordered their ramen with "Black Sauce" which cost us $1 extra which we already know and we love that Black Sauce topping. When the food was delivered, both ramen did not have black sauce on them, so we raised this to the staff. She said there must be some miscommunication and convinced (aka forced) us to take those ramen as returning will cause the chef to make whole new ramen (not just putting the black sauce in the same bowls (and chef might blame waitress for taking wrong order).
My friends and I decided to take them as forcing back may cause us anything to the coming ramen. Ramen were, however, totally failed on the day as we came here for their famous black sauce and we decided to say goodbye to Mr. Ramen San forever.

I was really looking forward to this place as the other reviews were so positive. I will start with the good. Service was quick, the ramen arrived in minutes. The chasu was good, noodles were ok as well. We had three different types of ramen and all had the same issue. The stock was tasteless to the point it was nearly water. I have had my fair share of ramen in Japan and this was no where near what it should of been. Even the instant ramens from woolies have more flavour. I am not sure if it was because it was lunch time and they had to water down the stock or what but even my son noticed how bland the stoxk was.
Sorry but for me it is a miss..

What I hate about food is no consistency. Been a chef for 12 years now. First time when we came here, the ramen blew my mind. I tried countless of ramen and this place had the perfect ramen so far, the broth is just superb. But today everything is just bland, broth is just disappointing taste like water with a bit of salt, eating instant noodles is way better. Not coming back for sure and just putting in my bad list restaurant. What are they thinking? Do they not try before serving it.

Taste is boring and staff rude. Much better ramen close by. Shop is cramped and rushed service. Staff also kick you out if you sit with your friends unplanned and no apology.

Probably the best places I’ve had ramen since my trip to Japan. You may need to line up and wait but the ramen is delicious.

They didn’t allow a split bill ! Absolutely not right! I insisted saying I didn’t know the person next to me but they still wanted us to pay in one go and no splitting our own meal! That s odd !

Authentic ramen with a nice gyoza that can be fried slightly longer for a better char.
Enjoyed the tonkotsu char siu noodles and will definitely go back for more!

Nice place to indulge in Japanese ramen if you crave for it (which we do after few days of western food). Broth is thick and flavourful although I personally prefer my charsu more melt in my mouth. The shop retains the Japanese feel with the posters, baskets to put bags and Japanese waiters. A nice place to get a good hot bowl of ramen soup!

How do you top delicious ramen for a good price? Complimentary noodle refill. Personally, I ended up splitting the extra noodles with my friend because truly the portion for one is enough to fill you up. It's my friend's favorite in town/perhaps ever and I was so glad to find it. It's pretty unpretentious and a great place to make yourself a regular. Expect to wait outside for a couple of minutes, but it won't take too long before you're filling yourself with scrumptious ramen

Little place off an arcade. Never really enjoy sitting on tiny backless stools; but i was amused by the thougthfulness of each table having a plastic basket on the floor for placing your bags ;] . we had gyozas and ramen both of which were delicious. Im quite sure up to three girls were highly amused {as they were laughing in our direction} at me , a left hander with no experience with chop sticks battling with my ramen with nothing but two sticks.note to self; I will practice when home.

Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
