Good quality home made dumplings made our day. The steamed Pork dumplings were just right, the perfect amount of soup and not outrageously hot lime most. The calamari however were way too salty, yes, I did order salt n pepper calamari but less salt would have made me taste the calamari. The Stir fried Prawn with vegetables were superb.

We decided to go here after a recommendation from a local and we are so glad that we did. We ordered the beef and cheese dumplings, pork buns and fried rice to share between 3 of us and we left full and satisfied. So fresh and flavorful. The staff were very friendly and our meals were bought out within 10 minutes even though the place was nearly full. Not fancy at all but everything is made fresh as you can see it being made from your table. For a total of $38 for dinner you can't go wrong. Wish I wasn't so full because I wanted to try more so we will be back next time we're in Melbourne.

Walked past at lunchtime and saw a line up out the front door. Thought it must be good so got on the end of the line. We were swiftly greeted by a friendly member of staff and were kindly asked to look through the menu and order our food while we waited for a table to free up. The line moved exceptionally fast as did our food once we were seated. Dumplings were the best we've ever had and the king pao chicken noodle special was delicious and full of flavour (and chilli!)
Would highly recommend for delicious authentic Chinese food! Will definitely be back next time we are in town.

That was our first time visiting Shanghai Street restaurant at Little Burke street. It was very easy to get there by Tram 96 from Southern Cross Station and stop at Russel Street Stop 7. it is only a hundred meters from the Tram Stop. The restaurant is not that big but they offer places to eat outside the restaurant as well. When you come there you will see people queue in front of the restaurant. They offer very great food from noodles to dumpling like wonton and siauw lung pao. I think they offer one of the best Siauw Lung Pao in the City!

After queuing we were happy to be seated in the warmth of the restaurant. After so many great reviews we were all excited about trying this place. Don’t bother! We couldn’t have been more disappointed. Our chicken and corn soup was cold, We were asked if our main meals could be brought out while we waited for our soup to be warmed! Main meals were brought out a LONG time before our fried and steamed rice which were ordered to accompany our main meals. The dumplings and bao were nice, as was the sweet and sour chicken, and chilli chicken. My husband’s crispy duck was the worst he has eaten. Our bill was slapped on our table by a rude woman while we were still waiting for most of our food to arrive. Overall a terrible experience prompting me to leave my first trip advisor review.

Came in on a whim for lunch after wandering Melbourne on Boxing Day. Here on a Xmas trip from Sydney. Solo guest, they welcomed me in and I was torn what to choose from their extensive and well prices menu, and because I was staying in a hotel up the road, I ordered take away for the evening.
What can I say? Great service, their spinach & pork wonton soup I wanted to snorkel in, very delicate, very tasty, fantastic broth. Their Kung Pao chicken punched me in the face, so if you don't like spice, it's send you to heaven. Sublime. Want to take some back to Sydney. Ditto their Xiao long bao - little pockets of heaven and finally everyone's bog standard chicken and corn soup, but it wasn't. Meaty, generous, silky and fresh. My Melbourne here think their next visit is because of them, and I am happy to keep the lie going.... Oh at it was $42. With a PH surcharge.

I’d been wanting to try this resto many times since i first visited China town. Line is always huge for dinner but seems very good vibrant at night though. I stoped this resto for lunch and surprised that no line at all. The food was quick and tasty. The staff was all right but not very attentive or friendly. Ordered Tan Tan noodles soup and it’s huge so i took leftover home. Got Mapho Tofu for takeaway and love the soft and melting tofu! Very delicious. Some restaurants around that corner use harder tofu and it makes the taste of mapo tofu big different. Love the tofu here is the best. If you wanna try but cant be bothered to wait for hours, i would recommend to come for lunch.

The xiao long baos were very well made with a thin skin and a right amount of soup inside.
I was slightly disappointed with the steamed egg custard buns. The filling was a bit rough and thick.
Would return for the dumplings.

We stopped at Shanghai street for dinner before going to the theatre. It was very busy so we thought it must be good . It was !
You wrote your own order on a pad on the table , it was quickly collected and the food arrived. It was delicious. Well priced drinks. A casual cafe that had a queue outside when we left!

My family and I including our two teenage sons were trying to decide on a restaurant to dine at down little Bourke street. We noticed that Shanghai street had a line up out the front so we thought that was a good indication that the restaurant must be good. The wait in the line was approx 15mins and the really unusual part is that you order your meal whilst in the line. I definitely did not enjoy this as I think it detracted from the dining experience and it can be tricky for all parties to view the menu in this way and decide on meals. Nevertheless - this is what we did. The restaurant was very basic in design but warm and cosy inside and certainly busy. Our meals came out quite staggered but the portion sizes and flavours were spot on. The sweet and sour chicken was literally inhaled by our teenage boys and similarly the stir fry beef was so tender and delicious. The other meals were nice also - 4/5 for meal flavour and quality

One star is still too much for our experience. We have eaten here many times. Today we ordered takeaway of our favorite dishes. I asked if we could have no rice as we were going home and would cook fresh rice. The mapo had only rice with a few pieces of tofu only, no meat and no sauce - the rice remained bare. We ordered two serves as well as noodles which similarly had no significant other ingredients apart from noodles. They were mean dishes. $50 badly spent and we are unlikely to go here again. Disappointment.

Went for late lunch when the crowd was manageable and need not wait long to get a table. Had fried rice, fired dumplings, steamed dumplings and water boiled dumplings in Sesame sauce. Liked the boiled dumpling best.

We still can't go past the pork and prawn wonton in chilli oil and sesame peanut sauce. We also ordered the hot and sour soup and stir fried green beans with pork mince. It was delicious - and quite reasonably priced!

Amazing dumplings!
The dumplings here are really amazing! Our favourites are the pork and prawn dumplings in chilli oil and peanut sauce. You can order other things too - we had the hot and sour soup, a plate of stir fried bok choy and a chilli beef stir fry which were all very good!

Excellent dinner here on the weekend. We shared a spicy chicken & peanut dish, 12 steamed vegetable dumplings, and jasmine tea. I love the system, and the atmosphere here. You decide what you want to order whilst in the queue awaiting your table. Advised that it may be a 30 minute wait, we were seated within 10 minutes. Delicious food, generous serves. The three of us left satisfied for less than $70.

Working my way around Melbourne’s fabulous dumpling locations. Unmistakable location - I could spend hours watching the team constructing dumplings in the front window. Unmistakable location - recognised by the queues down Little Bourke. Worth the wait! I’d have been happy to have been served a bowl of chicken broth without the dumplings! If you are solo or a couple, you are likely to be seated quicker than large groups. But waiting is part of the ambiance.

Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
