We stumbled across this place by chance - it was just beginning to rain, so we pretty much dived into the nearest restaurant. Whilst the restaurant was busy, you certainly wouldn't guess from the external appearance that you are about to experience some great Italian food. We had the mixed starters for two (but it's big enough to feed three... More

Dined outside in the laneway..lucky to find a table without a booking 7pm on a warm Saturday night. The place was humming inside and out but the staff work super hard to keep the service rolling. The tables outside are very close together, this is very common in Europe not so much here in the antipodes. The menu is extensive,... More

Great meal, nice ambience, great service! We enjoyed sitting outside on Hardware Lane and viewing the beautiful architecture of the surrounding buildings and watching people passing through the lane and enjoying their meals!

Ended my first Melbourne business day with a colleague at Max. Balmy warm evening so we sat outside and enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine each before ordering just one course. A freshly cooked Max burger and fries was the perfect order and my colleague enjoyed some lamb skewers. Nice busy restaurant with a nice relaxed vibe. A good choice... More

We headed up Hardware lane but got no further than Max's, the menu is large, the staff very welcoming and great at drawing patrons in,the food on the tables looked delicious. Our waiter Rene is a lovely young man passionate about food and very skilled in talking to all people. Before too long our drinks and entree was out and... More

We were exploring a number of the lanes in the city and were hooked in for dinner here by the offer of a free entree and drink. That was ok but of course the choice for both was limited! However the bruschetta with tapenade, tomato and mozzarella was lovely. I had the lamb salad a lovely combination of lamb fillet,... More

There are a lot of restaurants on Hardware Lane. We were happy we chose this one. I had delicious lamb shanks & my wife had a tasty chicken dish. The food could have been served a little hotter. Recommended.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
