Dropped in after going to a function nearby. Very funky cocktails prepared by uber serious bar tenders ( they take their jobs very seriously). Interesting if expensive Japanese themed snacks. Amazing range of sakes and Japanese liqueurs.Bring your wallet-prices are steep. Worth a visit for the groovy vibe and people. Dark and mysterious ambience-reminded me of being in an air-raid... Izakaya when the tennis is on in Melbourne is wonderful. Everybody is somewhere other than here. We could drink sake and eat tuna tataki without the usual izakaya busy. This place, despite that u need to know where it is, attracts a huge clientele because it is so good. If you want good service good Japanese street food and good... More

Visited for a quick bite. This was our second time here and not much has changed. It was really busy and we were unable to get a seat ( we didn't fancy sitting at the bar). We finally were given some seating and really enjoyed 3 plates to share. The food was lovely and a great range of drinks. It... More

Its been a while since I have been back to Izakaya Den. It use to be one of my favourite casual dining places until now. We made a group booking on a Friday night to find that the restaurant was only a third full. Our group table ordered the Oishi Set Menu. Pros: The menu choices looked good with a... More

Beautiful long space with an open kitchen where you can observe your food being prepared. Highly recommend the fried chicken, corn balls and salmon sashimi. The staff are all Japanese and very friendly and the music is great! The produce is fresh and if makes all the difference!

Went there to meet a visiting business friend. Had the lunch menu - food, service and price were very good, we were able to talk for good hour and a half, then he had to go. ideal for what we were after, so 4 stars it gets.

This Japanese restaurant is very authentic, and offers great set dinner menu with 12 food items and 3 desserts - amazing value for money ! We enjoyed many interesting dishes and found some new flavours in foods we would have otherwise not ordered - crispy kale, salmon sashimi, tuna, salad with black fungi, etc.. The highlight of dessert was green... More

Wow, cocktails, nibbles, beer and whisky, funky music. Not an Izakaya in the traditional sense. But we'll worth a visit.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
