My friends have raved about this place for years, but for various reasons I hadn't been there until today. We ordered several dishes and they arrived nicely spaced out so our table was never too crowded. We used the lunch menu, and were very happy with our dumplings and noodles as they arrived, happily clearing all of the plates and... More

Enjoyed this restaurant a lot. Tried to get in and was full but was able to make reservation a couple days later for supper. Actually ended up having 2 meals there. Lunch and supper. Both were very good. Shanghai soup dumplings and the wontons were our favourites. But certainly everything we ordered was excellent. Seems that dumplings are a Melbourne... More

Given the broad spectrum of reviews here I thought I would put my 2cents worth in. I found the food excellent and the dumplings possibly the best I've had in Australia .my son and daughter in law took us and it may have helped that she is Chinese. We did not ask for the food to come out in any... More

Worse Chinese food encountered in along time, couldn't even commend them on cheap and cheeful! A main waiter all he could say was mao,mao which is no in Chinese. If you are gluten free forget this place. They bring things out on their own terms and food very average.

The family went for a mother's day lunch. All i need to say was WOW. The dumplings we tried were absolutely great. Service by the staff was efficient and friendly. Best place for all types of dumplings in Melb CBD Will definitely return to sample more of their delightful food.

Chose Hu Tong after reading reviews and arrived just before evening opening. we shared 4 dishes which were all very good. Order to delivery was prompot and there were waiters being very attentive as it was at this stage not very busy. However by the time we left just after 6.30 it was packed and we were on the third... If you like tasty Chinese full of flavour, good service and one of your party is gluten free, then do NOT go to Hutong Dumpling Bar in Market Lane Melbourne. The service is appalling and the food has no flavour what-so-ever. One of our group is gluten free and although it boasts as having gluten free options the only thing... More

This was the second time we have dined at Hutong. On the first occasion we chose from the full menu and the meals were fine. This time we had guests from out of town and we wanted to treat them to a great dumpling experience. After some deliberation, as there is a huge variety of choice in the Melbourne CBD,... More

The host got us a table and advised we needed to be gone by 8. No worries. Was only 630 The food order process was easy enough but the... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
