We were a group and only 1 chef who could not cope with the amount of people. We had to ask the staff to take our order. Food came out very late, and not one person in our group enjoyed what they ordered. Terrible. Would not go back or recommend. The menu was limited also.

Lygon St. has scores of places to eat well, but the cheek-to-jowl seating sometimes is a bit much. Cafe Italia, just a few steps away on a side street, is bright and airy. The food is good, and the staff is friendly. If you want to relax while dining, this is the place.

Located in a little lane off Lygon Street, the dining area is open and breezy on a hot night and has the capabilities to be cosy with a open fire and plastic awnings to keep the warmth in on a cool night. Tables are spaced apart widely enough to allow you to easily converse with those on your table and... More

Visit here about twice a year to catch up with friends. The staff are always very pleasant and helpful, ensuring your experience is a good one. The menu is not extensive, but it still gives you have a good range of choices. The venue itself is very open, which means you do not have to squeeze between tables or shout... More

Visited this restaurant last night for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The service staff were excellent, very friendly and the food was delicious, we all had a different meal and every dish was lovely. Very nice inside where you could easily have a conversation. I would definitely go back again.

We used often to come here with our young children. I do not remember why we stopped. Perhaps it was because there were so many alternatives within a short distance. On this occasion I was one of a party of a dozen or so with a shorter selection on the menu. It was a good selection. Pizza pieces, a main,... More

We have been eating here for nearly ten years now, off and on. It started with our first date, and then our first anniversary, and other occasions since then. We love the fact it is off the main street of Carlton and has an open and airy feel. The menu has become more limited of recent years. (not a bad... More

A few years ago Italia was a dependable place for a family meal. Plenty of space for kids to run around when they have had enough of sitting, without bothering other diners. It is now a shadow of its former self. Staff are still friendly and accommodating but the food is gluggy and unappetising. Needs a face-lift and a new... More

Came here with a large group of people. --Couldn't find service staff, went to the bar to request drinks. We were told to return to our seats and someone would be over right away... 10 minutes later and still no one came, we returned to the bar to order drinks. --Outside of our table's bulk food order, not once was... Challenge: find a Lygon Street Italian eatery quiet enough for conversation over dinner. My answer: Café Italia, which is down a lane running off Lygon Street on the city side of the Faraday intersection. After a visiting interstate friend and I had seen a movie at the Nova, I took her for a walk past a few of the nearby... More

Staying in Lygon Street

Neighbourhood Profile
Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
