Tried the groupon tasting menu. Good value ($20) for two with small dishes of rice, beans, dhal, yogurt, two pieces of tandoori chicken, and a glass of wine each. However, all the food was served luke warm, except for hot naans. Worse, all the dishes were bland without distinctive taste or spice. I enjoy Indian food, but this dinner left... More

Amazing! Smart menu and the accompaniments section of the menu is a treat to explore making their delicious curries even better! We had such a lovely evening here highly recommend, very gracious host, authentic flavours and surrounds combine to make it a special evening! Would definitely return.

Very disappointed with the quality of food, offering of house wine only, and staff who were pleasant and trying their best but obviously struggling. We have dined in previously & ordered takeaway on many occasions, over a number of years, and have always rated the food very highly. Unfortunately, our recent meal was very bland - just a creamy tomato... More

Getting bored with Continental food,Bay of Bengal could solve your problem. The name is a bit of misnomer, nothing to do with Bengalee cusine. The original owner visited Kolkata and was very impressed with the place and thus the name..The restaurant is decorated with Bengalee paintings as well as images of Hindu god and goddess.Nice ambiance. The food is north Indian based ,fairly good... Booked for 5 adults. We bought a combination of 3 mains and 3 accompaniments, plus some naan bread and rice for 3. When we had finished we all felt that we had plenty to eat. Each dish had good flavour and they were able to space the serving so we didn't get it all at one time. The only downer... More

We bought a Groupon tasting voucher. You get what you pay for. Considering the voucher cost $20 and the food was supposed to be valued at $45 dollars, I would NOT like to think i spent nearly $50 for this meal and service. The food was memorable in a negative way, the food was only look warm. We had one... More

We're not really sure what has happened to what used to be a great restaurant ? ( Reading other reviews it seems there's now new owners !! ) Our party of 4 arrived at 7:00 and they couldn't find a record of our booking !! They squeezed us in though !! They weren't anywhere near full !! They took an... More

Although southern Indian, the menu at this suburban restaurant has little choice for vegetarians. The decor is standard and the service pleasant. Parking is an issue particularly on week ends so plan ahead. The wine list is a little limited with no Shiraz to be seen. Food is plentiful and authentic.

Description
The Bay of Bengal was the concrete result of many dreams. Del Lacota, owner/manager, had for many years nursed a desire to have a restaurant where he could offer people an opportunity to enjoy delicious food in a pleasant atmosphere, assisted by knowledgeable and friendly staff, and at affordable prices. When Del visited India in 1986 with his Calcutta born wife, he was charmed by both the people and the culinary specialities he enjoyed in each region he visited. On their return to Australia, Del set about learning what was needed to successfully cook Indian food. When in 1990, a small restaurant site became available in picturesque Glenelg, Del saw this as a window of opportunity to combine his visions. And so was born the Bay of Bengal (Bay, from the geographical location, and Bengal, from his wife's birthplace). From such an unassuming beginning, the Bay of Bengal has created a well deserved reputation for excellent Indian food in delightful surrounds. The reasonable costs and committed staff have resulted in a loyal following of patrons, both from within the local area, as well as further a field. To meet the demands of the growing clientele, the restaurant has had to be moved to larger adjacent premises; even these have required further expansion. Today, tourists enjoying Glenelg's historic attractions mingle with South Australians in the experience of the Bay of Bengal, one of the State's award winning restaurants.
