Exceptional, Authentic Sri Lankan dining.

My husband and I dined here after a recommendation from our son. The three course “Winter Warmers Banquet” was excellent value and the dishes were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Service was both friendly and professional. Unfortunately we aren’t local to the area. If we were this would definitely be our “go to” place for dining out!

Still open and functioning with great food

The operators have made a point of developing a special take-away menu for these challenging times, when so many other cafes and restaurants have closed. Our meal at home was outstanding. The pork smore was especially delicious. The roti also mopped everything up very well. I paid for the meal over the phone and it was subsequently placed directly into a bag, without contact. One of the staff kindly opened the front door for me, afterwards. Please - support our hospitality sector. Especially the people of Banana Leaf.

I decided to give the Banana Leaf a go based, not necessarily on the positive reviews, but on a response by the owners on a negative review. None of this "we are sorry that you did not enjoy the meal" bit. He told the reviewer straight - something about him being bad karma!. Anyway I am so glad I made that choice. The service and food were excellent. Being Sri Lankan it is a bit different from the norm. The only menu on offer was $65 ph 3 course meal with 4 or 5 options at each level. . On top of this is the wine, as there is no BYO, so it is a little on the pricey side. However it is well worth it. I certainly strongly recommend it.

Great take on contemporary Sri Lankan food

Took the recommendation of our helpful waitress in terms of dishes that would compliment one another. Shared spicy squid entree, string hoppers with a beef curry and accompaniments and a rich chicken Yaka Ge Kama on a thin crispy crepe. Attentive staff, beautifully present dishes and a wonderful blend of spices and textures to stimulate the senses.

Authentic Sri Lankan Cusine

This is definitely the best Sri Lankan restaurant we have dined at in Australia. We had a wonderful first experience many years ago when the restaurant was in Canberra city. Wasn’t sure if the restaurant was going to be as good, since relocating to Kingston. We were however pleasantly surprised! All our dishes we were outstanding and full of flavor. The sharing platter for 2 was just amazing. Even the kids rice/curry meal was delicious. Being Sri Lankan, we would not normally eat out at a Sri Lankan restaurant, especially a high end pricey one, like Banana Leaf. However I am so glad we did on this occasion, it was one of our best family dining experiences. This restaurant is authentic and is truly representative of Sri Lankan cuisine.... not hybrid Indian. Reminded us of some of the best 5 star restaurants back home in Sri Lanka. The place has certainly downsized since relocating, with a smaller select menu. However Banana Leaf is still so popular, hence bookings essential. It is clear why it remains one of the top classy restaurants in Canberra. Can’t wait to return.

Delicious Flavour, Friendly Staff

Ordered takeaway whilst staying local and can say our meal was absolutely delicious. We ordered Chicken Biriyani and Spiced Pork Smore and was plenty for 2 adults, 1 child. Staff were very welcoming and friendly and both dishes were amazing. The chicken was tasty and tender and the pork had beautiful spicy flavour. Look forward to coming back during our trip.

Enjoyable Sri Lankan in Kingston

Great meal at Banana Leaf. We went the Gamme Kaema - a ‘traditional Sri Lankan Village Set’ which gave us 3 curries, an assortment of pickles and sides, string hoppers and naan. Everything was delicious. Service was excellent with the meal well explained, and friendly attentiveness throughout. Would happily eat here again.

WOW, what a flavour sensation!! We were three, and everyone was rolling their eyes, humming, mumbling.....eating enthusiastically. It was a fine dining experience to remember, and I wish we lived near this venue, because I would come regularly. I don't know how traditional Sri Lankan it was, but it was, simply, sensational. The service was great, the owners are in attendance and are always happy to help your experience be a good one. Portions are good, the price is worth it. They will cut back on the spices if you ask. The wine list is adequate.

Spice but absolutely no heat

We dropped in to the Banana Leaf for dinner last night for some enjoyable curry and rice. We ordered the lamb shank and the duck curries with some rice and a crispy roti. We enjoyed it all, but whilst it was tasty there was no real hint of chilli at all. All we could think of was that the food has been heavily tailored to a western palate. Both the lamb and the duck we well cooked and tender without falling apart. Including a couple of soft drinks the bill was about $90 which wasn't cheap, but it is a really nice, contemporary restaurant, with pleasant, friendly staff and we enjoyed the food. Overall I'd recommend it.

Delicious food, Wonderful Service

The food and service at this restaurant was exemplary from start to finish. The service was attentive, kind and thoughtful with suggestions and advice given. The food was nothing short of amazing. The entrees we tried included, the cauliflower and prawn tacos, the prawn and vegetarian vadai and the yaka bao. The flavours in every one of these entrees was unique, new to us and most importantly delicious! For mains we had the duck, prawn and lamb shank curries. They were amazing and highly recommended. Again the flavours were superb! One of our party was vegetarian and a special main was offered to accommodate her tastes. Lastly we shared the Raspberry chia for desert. The delectable chocolate flavour, so moreish, we fought each other for the last morsel!

Disappointing.

The service was very pleasant as was the decor. The food was a let down, it was boring and bland. The barramundi was dry and overcooked, it did not marry well with the orange gloop upon which it was served. The Kula pol pork was memorable only for the toughness of the meat. The food was not much above tepid when it came to the table. It is hard to understand why this place gets such good reviews, maybe there is a whiff of the Emperor's new clothes involved.

Nice restaurant, food missed the mark

The service here and booking process was flawless. Really lovely staff but… the food lacks spice and the drinks are definitely on the expensive side. Ordered the prawn curry which was just okay because the prawns still had their shell on and the dish contained 5 prawns which for $40 isn’t great value, The presentation of all dishes was great and the ambiance is nice.
