We had been in Birr during lockdown but because we were staying in a hotel we could never avail of takeout, when the restaurant was doing takeout only. With the lifting of restrictions we were delighted to dine in. The menu was varied and we...chose 2 different mains, I had a coriander and garlic naan and there was pilau rice also. For dessert we had a homemade chocolate samosa and their homemade kufi ice cream. Everything was 100% delicious and Sanjay himself came out to see if all was ok. The restaurant also played Indian music, which in my book adds a great atmosphere. There was nothing which I have to say against this wonderful restaurant, apart from the fact that I will be returning again very soon.More

Such a great find. The food was amazing, the staff were so lovely, we couldn’t recommend any more highly. The goats cheese samosas were a particular highlight and the staff made such an effort with our toddler to make his evening special. If back in...Birr, this is the first place we would consider for an evening meal!More

The poppadoms were stale when they came to the table, not a good idea, as we very nearly left as we feared it might be an indication of what was to come. We asked for them to be changed, and the new ones were warm,...fresh and tasty, Food was average. I'm a huge Indian food fan, so eat in Indian restuaruants quite a bit. There was some interesting options on the menu, we tried the Mango chicken, and various sides, the Dal was tasty but very runny, more like soup. All the sauces were quite watery. The bombay potatoes were fine, but lacked spice, and the Naan was doughy. Slightly disappointing, but enjoyable enough. It was definitely pricier than I though, it is more expensive than our favourite in Dublin, and several I would frequent around the country, not enough to deter us from ordering, but it was surprising for a smaller town. It was a lot better the last time I visited, I would be slow to return.More

The food was top notch, couldn't be faulted. However we did not enjoy our meal as we didn't feel safe. There was not a meter between tables, customers barely had room to fit between them. Too close for comfort even without covid, it was impossible...to have a conversation. The young girl serving us was wearing her mask below her nose and the lady who seems to be the manager had her mask pulled down under her chin as she went to tables. Other customers were walking around the restaurant without their masks on. There was one bottle of sanitiser at the entrance but when I went to get some the nozzle was blocked, it obviously hadn't been used in quite a while. Very disappointing, will not be returning.More

Munching through our starter, (Onion Bhajis) , the only sound being that of chewing , punctuated with the occasional ecstatic moan following the act of swallowing we were finally back at Sanjay's after a forced two year absence due to the recent epidemic. Upon finishing...my wife looked up and said 'That was only the starter and yet I could leave now and feel I'd had a very good meal' I found the comment uncanny as I had just been thinking the exact same thought. The rest of the meal was compulsive eating; we found we just couldn't stop and gorged ourselves on each delicious offering. We were both going to refuse dessert but the thought of missing out on another of Sanjay's creations, and a sense of Duty, compelled us to opt for an iced confection, the name of which escapes me but which had the slight crunch of a sorbet but dissolved into a creamy cardamon-flavoured syrup that trickled down the throat to seek out the few remaining corners in the tummy that hadn't already been filled to bursting. Sanjay's is an hour and a half's drive from my house but I consider such an investment in time merely a great way to whet the appetite for the such a treat. Simply outstanding !More

I've been a customer of this Indian restaurant for many years. I've had some good experiences and some bad (as is the norm - everyone is human) both dining inside and taking away. Of late, I feel the bad have outweighed the good - especially...in the takeaway department where consistency and quality control seem to have taken a back seat. To be fair, there's rarely a problem with the order, the temperature or the quantity of main courses - These aspects are fine. The main problems are as follows: - The overuse of a 'base gravy' as a platform for so many of it's recipes leave a lot of the dishes looking and tasting the same - in spite of the fact the recipes often require different approaches. This may be fine in some places but it's not ok at these prices. - This approach also gives a great inconsistency week to week in the products. I have often ordered the same dish a week later to find it looks, feels and tastes very different. Not good. (In case people think there's exaggeration afoot here - both of us ordered two separate dishes on separate orders and once home, both were identical) - The popadoms are often stale. Not occasionally, often. - The play on small starter portions is taken to the extreme given the price - Tandoori chicken starter. 1 pretty grizzly drumstick - €5.10 to take away. In fairness, I have had some great food from Sanjay's. I only felt the need to write this review because I guess negatives stay with us more than positives. To be honest. I like this place more because it's the only one for miles rather than it makes me come back.More

We had dinner in Sanjay’s Kitchen twice in the past two weeks. Both have been excellent experiences. The food in Sanjay’s is top class - we had chicken lababdar, korma, jalfrezi and the monkfish special. I would highly recommend all of these dishes ! All...of the food is fresh with high quality ingredients. The menu has a great selection and the staff are so friendly and helpful in advising. Can’t recommend this place enough.More

Absolutely delicious. My favourite place to eat in Birr. I lived in London for over 10 years and never had an Indian as good as this one. Just go there, you won’t regret it.

We (4 of us) had dinner here this month. Menu looked good and when we speculated about the possibility of a tasting menu the chef/owner came out and offered us a selection of starters and mains...Wellbit was fantastic. Starters were prawn, duck lamb and chicken...as well as a potato piece which was delicious. Mains were prawn (in coconut sauce) monkfish (in a delicious mango sauce) chicken and lamb. All delicious along with aloo potatoes rice and mixed flavoured naan. Desert was a chocolate Samosa We'll be back! Thanks.More
