Bamberg old town is just full of great eating places and many have amazing surroundings as well, so you have to be good to stand out. This one is placed just below the Dom to catch the tourists climbing back downhill - no gardens or...More

We were on an overnight stay en route through Bamberg so we just wanted a few beers and a typical German rustic meal and we got both! All the staff speak English and are very matter of fact which is actually in a perverse way...More

Most of the menu looked great, but I wanted a salad. I was not disappointed. The salad was large and had a variety of greens and vegetables. Staff very friendly. I'd certainly go here again.

We ate here on a cold wet day in Bamberg. It was very crowded even for this small cozy establishment. Food was good but average Bavarian food. Service was OK, but I'm finding out that's pretty typical in Germany (perhaps more so in Bavaria or...More

We were shocked by the service here, which was surly to the point of rudeness. Worse, was the attempt by the waiter to intimidate a female companion by deliberately blocking her exit on her return from the toilet and attempting to "stare her out" -...More

This restaurant was recommended by my hotel. Be aware - from the outside it appears to be quite large but inside it's actually quite small - inevitably you will end up sharing a table. But to be honest, this wasn't a major problem as I...More

We have been several times over the last couple years and have yet to have a bad experience. The atmosphere is wonderful; very cozy, but perhaps a bit cramped. If you are going on a weekend, make a reservation. Roasted pork dishes dominate the menu-...More

Actually this is less a question and more a comment to you about the staff at the Katchelofen. I know the owner and did know the staff (as of a few years ago) and the place is far from rude. I am sorry that you had a bad experience with that particular waitress, but instead of getting on a website and land blasting it, telling people to never go there, maybe you should have asked to speak to the manager. As for them "reserving good service for native Germans" this is a complete and utter falsehood.. my husband and I are Americans, and we were treated so well that when we left Germany they actually gave me a card signed by the whole staff and a beer mug and the owner and some of the waitstaff cried with me over the fact that we wouldn't be seeing each other anymore. These people were so friendly in fact that when my sister came to visit us while we lived in Germany, we were excitedly approached by one of the waitresses at the Christmas Market and she hugged MY SISTER who she didn't even know, but said that she would love just because she was my sister. Then she insisted on taking her to meet the staff who was on duty at the restaurant, and they fed us for FREE. And before you go saying that my German must have been really good or something, I barely speak the language ... just a few sentences, because no matter how much I understand I just can't speak it. Has it occurred to you at all, that MAYBE just MAYBE you were putting off the unfriendly vibes because you were... as you said "forced" go there because everywhere else was to full? As for the food being average, that is your opinion... and I can't say anything about that... other than I will disagree with you and I have eaten at a lot of places all over Germany and grew up with a Germany Father who was an Executive Chef.

Authentic atmosphere-feel, sit with the locals and enjoy really good German food -"get to the point" waitresses. Trout was excellent, juicy pork meat with sides of sauerkraut & boiled potatos, the apple dessert (local speciality) was fantastic - crispy baked slices - YUM. Very affordable for the 4 of us, 3 course dinner with a round of smoked beer & local white wine with main course @ Euro 22/pp.
