This is a lovely 'proper' pub serving great guest ales. The staff are friendly and the food is nice with some lunchtime offers. Well situated in the town square, it makes for a lovely place to have a few drinks.

Visited the Market Tavern when we were exploring Durham. Its an old traditional pub in the market place so was fairly busy with a nice atmosphere. There were a few regulars in having a pint and watching the match, we weren't disturbed by this and sat in the dining area of the pub. We called in to sample their Sunday... More

It was a quiet evening in Durham in general but the female bar staff was very friendly and they had a good range of beer on tap. We had the fish and chills and the veggie fish and chips both were good and the fish was a good size. Decent pub grub in good surroundings, it's how it should be... More

Although tourists frequent the pub it still retains the 'proper pub' feel. Warm and friendly, clean and cosy with pleasant staff and tasty, affordable food.

Had lunch and a pint of beer while on a weekend away in Durham. The beer was excellent and the burger was one of the nicest I have ever had. The burger was homemade, served with French fries in an enamel dish with homemade coleslaw and burger sauce which was lovely. I had a plain burger and it was on... More

We called in for a pub lunch and found a hidden gem, good food, great service. The menu as a good choice of food on offer, at competitive prices. Good beer too! Ideal if you want a good filling meal and a glass of wine...or two.

It's been a long time since we were here. An interesting mix of couples and footie fans (there was a big tv in the rear with skysports on, ideal for us). Was not sure what to expect food wise but the quality, quantity and taste prevailed. Pictured is the chicken platter (supposedly for 2, yeah try getting someone to share,... More

In Harrogate we have no traditional pubs left anymore. They have all become champagne wine bars so it's refreshing to sit and enjoy a pint with extended family in an old fashioned traditional ale house.Atmosphere was good and we really enjoyed our visit

This is your average pub in Durham, nothing too fancy or exciting about it. It's not bad just not a place I would frequent. The food is hearty and generous, it's good value for money. Just overall a nice pub with good grub. Nothing much else to really.
