I will definitely be returning to The Kitchen, it was absolutely charming. Although we were late for lunch service, there was still plenty of choice and the food was superb. The food was hot and plentiful and the coffee was excellent. The service was very...friendly.More

My favourite place for lunch if I'm visiting Tavistock! The cheese scones are amazing!! The burgers are equally as nice. I would also recommend buying a cake for the road!

£23.85 for two cheese scones plus cheese and chutney, two hard and dry plain scones with jam and cream and a pot of tea for two. This was between a friend and I, not each. The cheese scones were really tasty, the cheese portion sizeable...and the chutney very nice but not in any way worth almost ten pounds (and tea was extra!). The plain scones were hard and dry. I did tell the waitress they were dry but no member of staff followed up on this. I was with a friend who I was supposed to be treating but I left feeling utterly, utterly ripped off and embarrassed. I understand from other reviews that they have in the past sold Dartmoor pony meat. Had I known this beforehand, I would never have set foot in the place, nor will I again.More

Beautiful little cafe in this stunning town, great location. The staff and service are excellent as was the food. Went specifically for a cream tea, was not disappointed and can't wait to return.

Lovely food and staff, very clean, dog friendly. The Grilled Halloumi was divine, and the pancakes and berries finished it off well. Good value and a friendly place .

As a local, I am keen to support independent cafés, but this was sadly below par. The owner (I presume) seemed to be sat barking orders at staff members which I find uncomfortable viewing and listening to. They seemed to be working hard and doing...their best. The coffee was bitter and overpriced, £3.99 for a flat white seems extortionate, even given the current cost of living crisis. For this money, I’d expect an accompanying nibble on the side of the saucer, but it was just a coffee in a pretty mug. Sadly given the atmosphere and coffee, I don’t think I’ll be returning.More

The family were all very keen to enjoy a Devon cream tea whilst on holiday and so, after a fair amount of research, we opted for The Kitchen which had fantastic reviews. A lovely little tea room, beautifully decorated and quite cosy, in one of...the side streets of Tavistock - we arrived, having had a good walk beforehand in order to build up an appetite! Having not had a cream tea for some time, I must say that I was shocked at the price (£8.99) but everything has gone up in price so I suspect this may now be the norm. There did seem to be a bit of surprise when we ordered the cream teas (I think perhaps it was still rather early in the afternoon) and we had to wait nearly 30 minutes for them to arrive which was also rather frustrating. Eventually however, we were served with very nice pots of hot tea - and a couple of scones each, with plenty of cream and jam - beautifully presented on slate boards. Unfortunately, after all that, the scones themselves proved to be very disappointing - particularly given the reputation of the place. They were edible but rather under-baked towards the bottom so I'm afraid we were less than impressed. I did let the waitress know as I felt that perhaps there was a problem with the oven or something similar, and whilst she was apologetic, we were a little disappointed that it was left at that - an offer to bring us an alternative or reduce the bill slightly might have been a nice gesture.More

I wanted to try this place as I regularly go to a couple of other venues in Tavi. The table was kindly wiped down before we sat down but was so sticky we couldnt touch it. We went for coffee, I asked for a americano...with warm oat milk and my partner had a cappuccino with oat milk. My coffee was really bitter, I added a couple of sugars and I still couldn't drink it. My partners cappuccino, was definitely not a cappuccino. I can't really describe it. Maybe weak coffee, which wasn't milky with chocolate sprinkles on it. Neither of us drank them. Waitress was nice but when I asked for the bill she brought the card machine and didn't tell me how much it was, until I asked. From a drink.perspective, I really would not recommend. Such a shame because I like to support local business.More

We weren’t sure if it was open but peered through the window and saw it was. Nice pleasant and friendly greeting, comfy seats. We both went for one of the specials, sticky chicken in a brioche bun with fries and coleslaw. Very tasty and all...very fresh. Would have preferred it served on a plate instead of a slate but it didn’t detract from the taste 😋😋 All washed down with a lovely pot of tea. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back, a little gem tucked away in Tavistock.More

Visited the cafe for tea and cake one Friday afternoon. We hadn’t visited before so when we arrived stood by the “wait to be seated” sign, a lady came over and showed us to our table. We then sat and waited …. and waited… for...someone to serve us. The cafe wasn’t busy it was around 1500 so not a peak time. Whilst we waited we had to listen to a lady (who I presume was the owner) sit and be obnoxious to her staff; demanding they come to her to speak to her (whilst they were busy working) and making rude comments about them not using her electric to charge her phones . Eventually my boyfriend stood up to go and order. We then waited for our food , it was literally a cup of tea and cake , it took a long time whilst the waitress helped herself to some cake . I do have to say that what we had was delicious and the selection of home made bakes very impressive. We then came to pay, we asked for the bill , the waitress came over with a card machine but never said how much we owed nor did she provide a bill, she just kept repeating “cash or card?”, it was so odd I made a joke we had to guess how much it was ! We paid and left , We won’t be returning unfortunatelyMore

We were really shocked at the price! All the lunch items were more than I have ever expected to pay, all around £14. I would think the overheads are considering there were about 7 members of staff which seemed excessive! The place was pretty and...cosy with welcoming staff however I’m still reeling from £13.99 for some button mushrooms in over melted Brie (which was so hot) and a piece of bread. Sorry but this needed saying.More
