Visited as a gift for a very good friend, arrived around 3.15 pm for afternoon tea, was met and welcomed, and offered a table, this was not to our liking, however upon request were quickly relocated to a table that suited us, just before 3.30 our order was taken (afternoon tea served from 3.30) and duly delivered to our table.... We enjoyed exclusive use of the historic London Room for our company Christmas bash. Following taking aperitfes in the historic York Bar we staggered across the reception hall into The London Room. This oak panelled room with magnificent fireplace provides a beautiful ambience for 16-20 seated guests. First class service and food hosted from the main formal restaurant. All our... More

Decided to pop out for Dinner, not been to The George for a while so thought we would treat ourselves. As always the food was excellent, with plenty of choice, service good. It is so nice to eat here, you never feel rushed but always staff there to look after you. Was a lovely relaxing evening and just on our... More

My boyfriend knows how much I love the George and have always wanted to eat in the restaurant rather than the garden room. So for our 2nd anniversary he booked us into the restaurant! Wow what can I say, fully worth the wait, the food was delicious, the service was second to none and the whole experience was better than... More

We chose The George as a special hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary and booked several weeks before. The George is legendary with many great reviews. We expected it to be classically furnished and have a wonderful old English charm. On arrival, we had a warm welcome and a lovely hotel porter to help carry our bags. However, the standard... More

Business lunch in the York bar. Very busy as always but swift polite service ensures nobody is kept waiting for too long. Even the sandwiches are very good at The George. Whatever you order you wont be disappointed. We were both a little shocked at the bill. Two ham sandwiches and two soft drinks cost approximately £25. That's rather a... More

My husband and I went for lunch on my birthday in mid-December. The whole place looked beautiful - there is nothing better to get you in a Christmassy mood than being in the George in December, the decorations were spot on as usual. We had a large gin and tonic each and then our Trio of Starters were bought out... More

The George is a great place to go! It has lots of different reception rooms, lounges and the restaurants are fantastic! The decor is a little dated in areas but this is the character of the hotel and goes really well. There is so much history to it and although it is pricey it's worth every penny! We had fish... On a recent visit to the George , for the prices charged i was expecting the very best , and was hugely dissappointed , average at best , i have had better food for a great deal less money. Overpriced and mediocre sums up the George. Where was the flavour? there was a lack on seasoning on all our dishes,the... More

A very charming old hotel in the middle of the town of Stamford UK. Extremely comfortable lounge area with open log fire for pre-dinner drinks. Here for the second time, this time for dinner. The restaurant is an attractive, large oak panelled dining room. Large tables, lots of space and comfortable seating. Candles on each table. Service is attentive, although... More

A magnificent oak-panelled space is the fine dining setting at The George Hotel of Stamford, one of England's greatest coaching inns. A mix of regular locals and hotel guests can always be found relaxing at bare oak tables beneath an eye-catching hand-painted ceiling. In summer, or on mild nights, they like to sit outside under the heated canopy in the ivy-clad courtyard. Open for grand lunches and dinner, the George Hotel Restaurant serves traditional yet imaginative English dishes, specialising in seafood. Lighter daytime dishes such as Dover sole are superceeded at night with heartier meals such as rack of lamb with fresh herbs and redcurrant jelly, and roast English beef carved at the table on a silver trolley. Accompanied by traditional trimmings, of course.
