Every trip to Vienna should include at least one stop at a coffee house, and this is one of the more classic Vienese coffee houses. The pastries are amazing to look at (and eat), the setting is beautiful, and the services professional, prompt, and pleasant.

We went there wanting to check an historical place advertised during a guided tour and we ended up never wanting to leave the place :) We tried some of their cakes and some light food during the evening. Everything was delicious and the place looks amazing, you just can't stop taking pictures inside.

This lovely old cafe was like going back in a time warp to the 30's. Very ornate ceilings and great atmosphere. What first greats you is a manikin of Seigmund Freud sutting at a table. You can sence the days of some what you could say are some interesting former visitors to here which include Hitler and Stalin. You are... More

Historical place...Hitler and Stalin perhaps drank coffee in the same day elbow to elbow while Freud was looking at them ... Historical again.... coffee was average...in the best case.... For history nostalgics.

Found the restaurant to be quite expensive, however, it's a tourist attraction so we were happy to pay. We had two coffees and shared a cake and the bill came to €15. Nearly €5 for a coffee!! Views inside are lovely though, and the cake we had was very nice.

This typical beautiful cafe, actually a must go. And worth standing in a queue for..what actually mives quite fast due to the spacy area of this cafe. Beautiful interior besides good selection of foods and drinks and not to forget cakes and pies. It gives an impression of how wonderful decorated restaurants could be in the earlier days. Do not... So many tempting goodies in this place! Also a lovely venue. We visited just after most Europeans had finished their Christmas break so no crowds The four of us sampled from the wide variety of cakes and slices on offer. Our top two were the Vanilla slice which had stunning flaky pastry coupled with 'to die for' vanilla custard; chocolate... More

Description
This famous traditional café with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature café was a meeting point for all ages, regular guests, Viennese locals and visitors. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience. Daily Live Piano Music from 5pm on! Reservations are strongly recommended to avoid waiting time - upon availability. Many thanks in advance for your understanding!

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
