We had dinner here on Easter Sunday and it was a nice experience. We arrived at 17.45h but the place was already full. The staff gave us a table with the condition that we had to leave at 19.20h which was fine for us. We ordered and the food came real quick. The grilled turkey, grilled trout and pork schnitzel... We visited here on a Tuesday evening as it was just around the corner from our hotel. The place doesn't look much from the outside but has a cosy warm interior. The restaurant was extremely busy with loads of people constantly coming and going. The staff were friendly and the food was good. We both had different beef dishes and... More

My first review was in 02/2016. Vienna has an incredible number of good places to eat and I make an effort to try different restaurants, but recently I was back at the Fromme Helene. In addition to a well varied menu, there are also regularly specials. I decided to try the specials Baerlauchcremesuppe, (4.20€) and Pierogi Spinat und Schafkaese (9.90€).... More

We were a bit disappointed by our visit to fromme Helene, it was very close to our hotel so we really wanted to try after reading some good reviews ! First time we stepped in we were told they didn't have space, which is of course fine as we didn't book but we thought the waitress was very cold and... More

We had expectations of a great meal based upon other reviews. The restaurant itself is lovely with plenty of character, and we were very lucky to get a table on a Friday night at 6pm without a reservation. My wife ordered the weinner schnitzel which was huge when it came. It was so big and thin it was cold by... More

Enjoyed my meal. My husbands duck was slightly over cooked. Nice wine. Service got a little slow later as they had some large party bookings Good value for money

We turned up without a reservation but were seated with no problem. The place was busy with locals. The staff were really helpful and we ate the goulash and schnitzel. Both were fabulous. The waitress recommended wine and we ended up having the equivalent of 2 glasses each. Good value night out, plenty of atmosphere

Young, friendly staff, a cosy and typical Viennese atmosphere, and good food, all in a vibrant area around Josepstaedter Strasse. I had the Wiener Schnitzel, not a bad place to have one.

Fantastic restaurant tucked away in a street off the main drag. Had a great meal, typical Austrian food. Friendly staff. Definitely recommend

This is a high quality restaurant, old fashioned in appearance, offering traditional Austrian fare. But it does it very well and the prices are reasonable, so if you want to get something more traditional then this is an excellent place to come.

Staying in Josefstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
Josefstadt
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
