Under Kastanjen (under the Chestnut tree) restaurant gets its name from the large chestnut tree a few metres out side the restaurant. Located in Gamla Stan at the intersection of three narrow streets, Under Kastanjen is a coffee house, bistro, restaurant all rolled into one. The staff is delightful, the ambiance cozy and comfortable, and the food is delicious! The... More

Went on a Wednesday after lunch in January, around 2pm. It was completely empty. We went as part of a food tour. We had coffee and kanelbullar, which were DELICIOUS. We sat downstairs and it was like a cave, really calm and quiet. Nice bathrooms.

If you are vegetarian and need gluten free products this is the perfect place for you! Unfortunately if you are also vegan (like me) there are eggs in every gluten free product so I couldn't taste them ... But I appreciated that the waitress took some time to check all the ingredients. I had a coffee while reading a book... More

because it was so good the first time. On my first day I was wandering around Gamla Stan, cold, tired and jetlagged. I couldn't decide where to eat and then wandered by this lovely place. The checkered tablecloths lured me in and I had a delicious salmon salad which, in my opinion, was a good value for such an expensive... More

We were referred to this restaurant by my wife's cousin who lives in Stockholm. My wife's sister has Celiac disease and needs to a strict gluten free diet. This restaurant has a gluten free menu that is amazing. All of us enjoyed the food immensely. My sister-in-law was able to eat the foods she came to Sweden to enjoy, especially... More

We have had breakfast several times in old town in Stockholm. It is good café with a normal swedish breakfast to at good price. The bread is baked in the café, the müsli is made there and they have their own coffe and tea blend. It also has a nice atmosphere.

This is, generally, a very normal restaurant... Nothing very special, but solid and good. I had the Köttbullar (Swedish meatballs you might know from the IKEA restaurant), which very absolutely delicious and the best I ever had.... My friends had various dishes (burgers, salads etc.), and all looked great and my friends said they were very good as well.

In a small square of Gamla Stan under a chestnut tree you can find this cute, cosy place where you can take a coffee and desert, lunch or dinner. The food is nothing special but nevertheless well cooked and there is a wide selection of tasty wines and beers you can accompany it with. Candlelight in the evening and the... More

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
