Owners and barman are great. Excellent choice of ales that you can taste before you buy. Good choice of wine. Very good food presented well, not too expensive. often have fresh fish. Lovely atmosphere where they remember your name

We met our good friends for Sunday lunch, roast beef, roast turkey, beef chilli and scampi. The pub was busy but all your meals were excellent. We only had a brief wait and our drinks were readily replenished. Finished with a shared cheese board. Very relaxing, great cooking by Hayley, good bar service from Mitch and a contented waddle home.... More

Sunday lunch with our 3 children aged 3 to 14. Food was great, really good portions. The cauliflower cheese and pork belly was to die for. Great range of beer and cider, next time someone else gets to drive!!

After a long drive we all decided to stop at a small old fashioned pub for a drink before looking for a nice restaurant to eat at. Our group of 4 were pleasantly greeted at the bar, given our drinks. We were glad to find nice big relaxing squashy chairs to rest our tired bodies into. Whilst we chatted we... More

My 85 year old mother-in-law took my husband and I out for a belated birthday meal and she obviously wanted it to be a nice one. Some misguided soul had told her The Compasses was good so she booked. We were squeezed onto a table really meant for two so we asked to move. When the Pate came I had... More

1. You were seated on a table designed for four. You were moved to a table that usually seats six; eight sat there for lunch the same day. 2. The seating issue may be correlated with your lack of satisfaction with 1/4lb beef, cheese sauce and double carbs (heavy on the chips) as reasonable sustenance. 3. Had you wiped the... More

Went for Sunday afternoon lunch. Good points: Roast was wonderful and the selection of ales (5 on) was impressive, I was offered tasting glass without asking. Less impressive: Clientele - A quiet, small, almost rustic pub is not the place to bring babies that scream the place down, or impatient toddlers. The bar area is "basic" at best; OK if... More

This cosy village pub, like others in the area, was threatened with closure very recently and it looked like nearly 250 years of local bonhomie was to disappear under a housing estate. But not only has it been rescued, it has now deservedly won awards for most improved pub in the Maldon area. The attentive and knowledgeable staff have a... More

We have lived in the Totham area for 58 years and this is the first time we have been to The Compasses in Totham and it will certainly not be our last. We had arranged to go out for lunch with some friends and we wanted to go somewhere different. We have often passed The Compasses and heard that it... More
