We decided to give the restaurant another try, as we had been a little disappointed with the atmosphere 5 years ago. Well, this time, things have been transformed- for the better. We had an absolutely fabulous meal, served with the right level of panache and pride. The starter of fois gras in a madeira wine jelly was quite amazing and... More

Last Saturday my wife and I invited a couple for dinner to the restaurant at Casa Velha do Palheiro. It was a culinary highlight! The Maitre d', Sr. Luis, is the garant for professional and charming hospitality, and he offers discret suggestions about menu and wine list. The culinary product is second to none, innovative, tasty and well presented; and... More

We stayed at the villa Atlanta in the Palheiro Village for the run up to our wedding which was held in the beautiful Palheiro Hotel award-winning Botanical Gardens. We've just returned from 11 nights in Madeira, and the highlight was Casa Velha restaurant! Snr Luis goes out of his way to make you feel special, and he is ably assisted by his team, many of whom have been at the hotel for many years, and welcome you back like old friends. The food is always of very high... More

We stay in the hotel on our honeymoon, went to the restaurant a few times. Although sophisticated, it's very warm and cozy. Food was wonderful and the service excellent. For the wine lover, they have a excellent cellar. They serve light meals as well, the hamburger with foie gras is the best I ever had.

Vegetarians beware - my wife asked the waiter what veggie starters there were, he mentioned gazpacho, which sounded great on a hot day, however it came with Squid and Caviar in it!!! The rest of the food was ok, but could not justify the price tag. I raised the matter with the hotel, and discovered that there was a vegetarian... More

Dear Bob, Thanks for your review. We are very sorry the mix up and that it spoilt your experience at Casa Velha. Our a la carte menu does have a Vegetarian section which perhaps must have been overlooked. The Gazpacho you chose is clearly described as - “Tomato Gazpacho, caviar, squid à la plancha”. We are sure it was a... More

Description
Decorated in restful shades of peach and designed to embody the style and comfort of country living, the Casa Velha dining room reflects the classical elegance associated with the hotel.
Handsome mahogany tables set across a floor of smooth wood enhance the room's rustic appeal. Lighter, wicker tables placed outside on the terrace offer more spontaneous, al fresco impression.
French windows curtained in lace and crowned with a floral trim afford fine views back across the gardens.
Polished silverware and Villeroy & Boch tableware in petite fleur motif exemplify the attention to detail. Sprays of fresh flowers add colour and fragrance.
In the morning the mood is cheerful, relaxed and homely.
Friendly waiting staff in uniforms of crisp white shirts, holly green tunics and black slacks serve tea or coffee, promptly and without fuss.
An impressive Continental buffet breakfast spread tempts with an array of freshly baked pastries, assorted jams and spreads, cold cuts, and fresh fruit and juice. An English-style cooked selection provides a heartier option. And guests can also order from a unique menu of eggs cooked to order and served in various ways including fried, poached and scrambled. A more civilised way to start the day is difficult to imagine!
As evening falls the lights are lowered and a more formal atmosphere pervades the room.
This is where to enjoy a romantic, candlelit dinner in intimate surroundings, where discretion and courtesy go hand in hand.
A choice menu of the finest gourmet cuisine is matched by an enviable selection of Portuguese and international wines.
Eating here is an essential part of the guest experience and complements any stay at Madeira Island.
