Fantastic place to eat, visited for my wife’s 50th birthday with friends. Went for the 3 course meal with wine option. You choose 3 courses and have various wine provided at each course. Lovely mushroom dish to start, the star was the beef Wellington, superbly...cooked steak, then cheese and biscuits. Wonderful meal with great company, my wife had a great treat for her 50th and friends paid, so what could be better. Great evening and would highly recommend the place. Bit expensive but the 3 course option is value.More

Very disappointing. Restaurant is run by a somewhat aggressive and overbearing proprietor named Albert. Concept menu costs 45 euros and includes wine and water but glasses were hardly ever refilled or topped up, the white wine was totally undrinkable and the red was only marginally...better. Other Funchal places offering concept menus take pride in providing decent wine…Hemingway’s sadly does not. Food was totally overpriced on the a la carte menu and although prawns with avocado cream and confit of duck were acceptable , lamb chops were dry and totally overcooked. Plus points included good breads but Hemingway’s was a huge disappointment with its niggardly wine top ups and pretty average food. There are much better places to dine in Funchal including Cris’s Place, Franco’s Corner, Avista etc. Not recommended. Not recommended.More

We have eaten here many times in the past, back to when it was Mar Brando. Two days ago we booked a meal in advance, and when we arrived we were shown to a table next to the door, with customers walking past all the...time. The tables are quite close together, but some are less exposed to passing traffic. We immediately asked to be moved to one of the vacant tables but were just fobbed off and even on asking again, the manager refused to move us. We left the restaurant and will never return to Hemingways after this sort of treatment.More

Had a lovely evening here. Really good selection on fixed price menu, which is really good value for money and includes wine, water and coffee and port. The food was delicious. Staff friendly and attentive.

The most polite owner Albert with so much information on so many topics including writers .The food was outstanding and the famous beef Wellington lived up to its name !

Great evening spent at Hemingway’s hosted by Albert. Food was great, service was great and the wine was flowing! The live music from the saxophonist was a great touch

The live Saxophonist has a great repertoire. The music is enjoyable yet not too loud. The food is well presented and good. The main was tastier than the starter. The price is ok especially with a fixed price full course menu. We went à la...Carte paying more but it was still ok mostly thanks to the Saxophonist who played wonderfully throughout the meal. I would have put Excellent if the service made me feel more at ease. The quality of the service is inconsistent with service etiquette going amiss at times. But this place certainly exudes the slight poshness of a fine dining venue.More

We came here on our first night as it this restaurant has great reviews. And I see why! We were greeted with prosecco and the staff were so lovely and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious and all came in good time. However... our experience...was topped off with the live saxophone player who played wonderfully all evening. He was so spectacular that we were in tears at one point. This restaurant just has a special feeling that I can't describe. We were so overwhelmed with the experience that we came back on our last night and enjoyed the food and saxophone one last time. The novelty definitely didn't wear off and was just as special. This restaurant may not be 5 star in terms of interior, decor and flamboyancy, but it definitely is in terms of food, service, and authenticity. A little gem I will not forget. Thank you!More

We walked in to this restaurant because of the friendly reception gentleman. Without much expectation, we were served with a glass of sparkling wine right at the beginning. The starter was nicely presented but then we waited for more than 30 minutes for the main...course to be served. My husband's fish fillet was nicely presented but my beef skewer had no presentation at all. I was disappointed thou the taste was good. There is no outdoor sitting in this restaurant and that means a bit too warm for us. We did not want to take any dessert afterward as we did not want to sit in the warm restaurant for any longer.More

From a warm welcome at the door to just really well cooked and presented food we had a great meal. The menu has enough choice to please anyone, including my vegetarian partner, but whilst being restricted enough to ensure the quality. We went for the...‘all in’ deal where you can have whatever 3 courses you want together with very well selected house wines for a set price. Great option and they were happy to continually top up the glasses throughout. Included complimentary fizz on arrival and a desert wine at the end, and coffee. As good as the food and chef was a friendly and well trained front of house team overseen by the owner who has instilled just the right mix of friendliness with great attention to detail. The only slight downside were poor acoustics that meant it was sometimes a little hard to hear, but not enough to spoil a wonderful meal. Not to be missed.More
