Stopped here for cakes and coffee while visiting the area around the Castello de S.Jorge. Really nice location, away from the crowds of tourists milling around the Castello entrance. There is an outside seating area by the castle wall, which was bathed in sunshine when we were there. Good selection of drinks and cakes on offer to indulge yourself.

We stopped off for some lunch after touring the castle. It's a very small bar, but the welcome is genuine and they were happy to push tables together to accommodate us. There's a range of tasty meals and snacks including pizzas and a great dish which was a ham, sausage and cheese toastie cooked in a tomato and beer sauce.... More

We were staying nearby and stopped for dinner one night. Hugo was so friendly that we ended up making it an afternoon ritual to stop in. The hospitality definitely contributed to making our visit to Lisbon such a positive experience. Enjoyed chatting with them and can't thank them enough for answering our questions. Warm and friendly atmosphere.

Small, pleasant and unpretentious family-run place that attracts locals, working people and tourists. Tried the `Francesinha` for the first time - interesting variation on the `Croque Monsieur` - glad that I did. Staff are welcoming and speak good English. Prices reasonable, service good. Good music to be heard here too. Surprising to find a place like this so near Lisbon... More

I've been to this place 5 times since visiting Lisbon. I really like it because it's very welcoming. The service is always good and I have never been disappointed with the food. There are a lot of places around the castle to eat, but this one is a gem among them.

An ideal and well located stop for lunch, cold drink or just coffee...steps from the castle entrance. Not a tourist trap, loaded with charm, friendly staff = must visit!

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
