We had a meal here early evening and it was dreadful. This may be a beautiful patisserie, but the meal we had was poor. I left most of mine, as did my husband. It was tasteless, cold and like fast food.

We stopped by one evening to have mint tea and two small tarts. It was lovely - good toilets too, which is a struggle in Lisbon.

Benard is a lisbon classic, one of the true classics still standing. A lot to be said, i'll just say this. Come here for the croissants, they are not french, not similar to any other one you've eaten also, they are Benard's unique and are delicious. Choose the room in the back for a stylish classic scenery and please order... More

This was our first Nata in Lisbon and they were cold and too sweet. We also tried other pastry because this Restaurant offers a lot of choices but unfortunately they all tasted ok. The staff was very friendly though, explained every questions we had.

Benard is a more upscale, quiet version of the Cafe Brasileira up the street. Great Portuguese coffee, pastry, sandwiches and other light fare served both in and outside. Outside is great for people watching.

I read somewhere that this place was supposed to have great pastries, particularly croissants. I stopped by and tried one as well as a green tea. The tea was fine, but the croissant wasn't worth it. These old cafes are a fun way to experience Lisbon, but folks need to realize these places aren't known for service and great quality.... More

Tonight (24 Nov. 2016) I was accused by the manager or person in charge of the run the place at the time, without asking a question or listening to me, to have not paid the bill of the previous clients that sat on the table I was sitting. I sat on a table that had, what looked like, a bill... More

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
