We were afraid to have found a very "touristy" place, but in the end we were pleasantly surprised: the food was very decent and the spectacle was composed of a mix of folk music shows, including fado. I wouldn't go there if you want to experience the "real" fado deal: it would be better to go to a smaller place... More

As it was january 1st and most of the restaurants we wanted were closed, the taxi driver suggested this one. He took us there and received a tip from the restaurant, for sure, as he parked and got in with us. Well, food is not bad, and there are fado presentations every night, but really expensive for what you get.... More

I visited this restaurant with a tour group so was already with a convivial group. The food and wine were very good though the salt cod,a Portuguese speciality, could have done with a little more soaking to remove excess salt. The fado was fascinating, particularly the last session which was impromptu with the singers placed in different positions around the room. They then... More

I was subjected to this restaurant as part of an escorted tour. Our group was prepared for this stellar traditional "Fado" by being told its significance to Portuguese tradition derived from a "soulful" history filled with pathos. I would basically concur with that last part, it was pretty much pathetic! The food was only fair, as might be expected in... More

There is a long cultural history with Fado in this area. The locals love it and are proud of it which is great. I am always willing to listen to, and understand, new music types and styles. That said, Fado is not one of my favorites. The language barrier didn't help, but the songs felt heavy, overly emotional, and amateurish.... More

Timpanas is a restaurant with excellent food although the venue is really dedicated to showcasing the music traditional to Lisbon and the music and dance traditional to the countryside near Lisbon. The artists are world class musicians, singers and dancers and recordings of their music/singing or videos of their dance & music are available for sale at the restaurant. Of... More

Timpanas is one of those places that's on the list for every tour group that visits the Alfama district. The buses pull up a couple of blocks away and discharge scores of passengers that keep this place in business. So it's touristy? Absolutely; but delightfully so. The maitre d'hotel and his staff are fun to be with and seem to... More

The food here was good, unlike so many places that offer entertainment. The place looks to be in a questionable neighborhood but is attractive inside. There were several acts, dancers and singers. All were enjoyable. No problem getting a taxi when we left.

I don't know if it is every night, but the night we were there they had a Fado act and a traditional costume and music act. They have too many tables for the area, we were crowded in on the main floor and then there were other areas with more tables. We were a bus group of 40 and I'd... More
