This place is a little gem! Came here with my husband to have an evening of Portuguese food and fado and were not disappointed. You need to book a table in advance, as the restaurant is small. Guests arrive at 19.30-20.00. I booked through email, all process was very simple and I found that the restaurant is very responsive. Upon... More

I admit to loving fado and having listened to a lot of it. That this small place is run by a family of talented musicians makes it truly remarkable. We loved the food, the music, the atmosphere and the conversation with the musicians. We stayed until they were ready to take us out with the trash. When we reserved we... More

I've read the debate as to whether this restaurant and Fado music was worth it. We feel it is worth the fixed cost... 45 euro for dinner and show. The food was very good. We had the seafood entree which was excellent, upgraded our wine to try the Vinho Verde (green wine... grapes that is - wine is white), and... More

A friend suggested this restaurant. We emailed from Cape Town, well in advance, saying "we would like to come on Wednesday, 19 April ... ". The reply came "Yes , but come at 19.30 ...". When we arrived at said time (taxi, on foot), but we were told that we were not on the list! We had neglected to confirm... More

A bad classification within the parameters that is already habitual. Someone who did not confirm the reservation and blame us, when it was her fault, who did not understand the email The title of the comment begins soon with a Lie! She did not confirm the reservation so how could she say she had a reservation? This person asked for... More

We visited this restaurant with a couple of friends, all four of us coming from Holland. We enjoyed the atmosphere in the restaurant, very cosy, good food, and three of us getting acquainted with the "fado". I myself, am a great fan of the "fado", as I grew up in a Portuguese speaking country. I would advise anyone to try... More

A visit to Senhor Fado is like being invited into the home of a talented Portuguese family. You are made to feel very welcome and comfortable. The forthcoming evening is explained and the hosts show a sincere interest in you. We were all tourists of course: Poles Germans Americans, French, British and my Finnish wife. The lady of the house... More

Duarte is the husband, Marina is the wife and the Alfama neighborhood of old Lisbon is the place...family-owned and run well, great food, organic and wholesome, lots of wine and delicious atmosphere. THEN, the cook and maitre D take off their aprons and sing FADO...so much fun, talent, pizzazz and soul! While I could do without a lot of the... More

The best answer to this comment is the following comment :) Thank you Mr. Badgerbobby45 :) As for this gentleman himself: there is only an intention here to injure him when he says "..but I am Portuguese and perhaps for that reason more critical" ora this gentleman lives in South Africa for many years, he told me himself, of Fado... On off the least pretentious of Lisbon's Fado restaurants is also one of its finest. Hosts Duarte Santos and Ana Marina treat guests as family and the homely ambiance is warming and inviting. The homemade gastronomy is noted for its textures and flavours and generous portions, with the seafood cataplana (stew) a much-lauded feast. The menu is limited, but here it's all about the quality of the food. As for the entertainment, this is local fado at its most authentic -- the singers and musicians have known each other for years, and the performance is heartfelt and genuine. Quite often, diners are invited to join in which makes the evening truly memorable.

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
