Here is a bloke who knows his stuff. Johan has a passion for the stories of the people that fought just over the road in Polygon Wood 100 years ago, and he has the experience in battlefield archeology to bring it to life. I will be watching the development of the Brothers in Arms project and wish him every success.... More

This is a small bar-restaurant run by Johan Vanderwalle and his wife and is a great stop-off after walking the length of Polygon Wood from the Australian 5th Division Memorial. The beer is cold and a pate salad lunch is great value and a real treat. Johan has also many relics of the First World War with a special emphasis... More

Stopped in for lunch after a morning of battlefield tours. Lots of people, mixed crowd, but everyone friendly. Good range of beers on tap, cheap and tasty food. We had a couple of "croques": large, with good fillings and small side salad. Johan was fascinating to talk to and a huge fan of Aussies. He has spent his life helping... More

Stopped off here whilst in the area & after reading the reviews. A must visit for any Australian's or others visiting the area (just by Polygon woods) - Johan is so passionate & provides a unique perspective on the Australian's part in the war & the underground/tunneling battles - all whilst enjoying a tasty Belgian beer. The exhibition in the... More

We stopped here as part of a group tour visiting WW1 battlefields. What can I say but AMAZING! We were served lunch and drinks and Johan, the owner, shared one of the most moving stories we heard on our tour. The atmosphere is lovely and a real tribute to Australia. The drinks were cold and the locals were friendly. A... More

We went to the Anzac Rest Cafe as part of an organized WW1 Battlefields tour for a lunch stop. We were assured that this was a very special place and that Johan, the owner, has a unique link to Australia. He does (Google the cafe) and it is well worth going there even if you are not on an organized... More

We liked the casual atmosphere of this place and the friendliness. We were just after a drink (there are good beers available) and a casual type of meal and this place was perfect however it was Johan with his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject that made the night memorable. He played several documentaries of interest on the... More

We had visited the Tyne Cot military cemetery and were staying in A B&B two doors down. I'd done loads of driving so didn't want to get in the car to find somewhere to eat, so we walked the 2 minute walk to the Anzac Rest. Great Belgian beer (don't ask for Heineken as you *will* cause offence!) and good... More
