Probably you would not come here if your aim is to eat a lot, but for sure you would if you love to try fine dishes that are different and if you like to experiment new tastes. This resto is a small room along one of the amazing canals along the centre of Amsterdam, few tables and a cosy environment,... More

Great french style restaurant. French cooking in a modern way. Big flavours smartly built in, in mostly classic dishes. Attentive staff in an Amsterdam cozy "gezellig" atmosphere with Jacques Brel in the background. Top tip: Ask for the corner table in the souterrain!!

We booked a week ahead on the advice of a friend, and arrived by Uber on schedule at 8 PM. The restaurant is in a relatively undeveloped warehouse area somewhat like DUMBO, in Brooklyn, was years ago. It stands on a corner, just over a bridge with one side overlooking the harbor. The fixtures are workmanly and opera can be... More

My husband came across this restaurant while he was wandering about as I was shopping. We came back for dinner, and were quickly seated at a table, even though we didn't have a reservation. We ordered the 5-course fixed price meal, and were delighted to be able to sample a variety of dishes. Staff was attentive, and we could tell... More

We were staying at a nearby hotel and asked the concierge to recommend a restaurant. He recommended one 2 blocks away. It was 90 degrees that day and this restaurant had no air conditioning and only one window that opened to get fresh air. There was only one table occupied and they looked very warm. We looked across the street... More

We visited on the 2/10/2016 for a birthday celebration for our mom. We arrived at 6:00 pm and there were no customers at the restaurant yet. Our family of four sat and ordered the food as usual. The waiters appeared without the smile. As I am from London, I thought it could be a cultural thing, as we know, Dutch... More

Gebr. Hartering offers a la carte, 5-, or 7-course tasting menus; having read innumerable reviews beforehand all vouching for the tasting menu, we opted for the 5-course menu and were not disappointed. (The 7-course menu would have added a cheese and prime rib [apparently their signature dish] course.). The first 3 courses were for sharing -- in our case, a... More

My friends had been recommended to try the restaurant and we weren't disappointed. The 7 course taster was varied and different. The rosemary smoked beef was something else. The salted cod much better than I thought it would be. The octopus cooked to perfection and who knew cabbage could be so delicious. A great selection of wines to pare with... More

Try to get a table downstairs, or even on the canal barge outside the windows (weather permitting). Terrific atmosphere. One preset multi-course menu, but excellent cuisine. This restaurant is more expensive than many others in the area, but a great place to try for a special occasion.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
