I have been here about 3-4 times on business dinners. Nice French restaurant with cozy atmosphere overlooking Damrak and canal. Very central location. Nice choice of French dishes. Not stuffy, staff attentive when needed. Price quality for Amsterdam is excellent. I've had many mediocre meals for this price point.

Fine dining in the Red Light District is possible here. We went here for a 7 course dinner. The food was great, the service from a high level and the wines they served with the menu were very good. It's a lovely building next to the water and if you are lucky, you get a table watching it. Why I... More

The W Hotel (fabulous!) recommended this restaurant for our last night in Amsterdam. We requested a small, romantic restaurant with great food. This was perfect! The food and service was excellent. We highly recommend it!

We went there for a 7 course dinner and it was absolutely delicious! The service was at the perfect pace and the waitresses was attentive enough. They have an extended wine menu, and we got some good advice for the wine. If youa re looking for a fine dining night, this place is definitely recommended!

Unfortunately, the service was horrible, nobody in the restaurant, empty, manager and waitress were very crass, oafish. I cannot recommend. I that’s way they do not have customers. Dirty outdoor seating.

Very centrally located and well hidden in the noisy tourist neighborhood, the restaurant offers very nice food and experiments with combining tastes. Have to taste ice cream aged in oak, as well as asparagus ice cream with cucumber dessert. Worth a visit and experiencing strange but great combinations.

Eating here was the highlight of a week in Amsterdam. The food is simply superb, with a wine list to match. The chefs may work in a tiny kitchen, but what they lack in space they more than make up for in creativity. The 4/5/9 course tasting menu is truly excellent. Definitely recommended as being second only to Heston Blumenthal... More

I've been coming to this place for many years now. Normally the service is excellent with very attentive staff. Maybe because this was a weekday lunch and there not too many patrons. In fact I think it was just our family and a couple of others in the restaurant for lunch. The service stared slow but it eventually picked up.... More

Very tasty and nicely prepared food in a really cozy atmosphere at the water. We had the table outside completely for ourselves which was perfect. The Starters were amazing and the service was very caring. Definitely worth a visit!

Arriving by train? De Compagnon restaurant in the very heart of Amsterdam’s old city is five strolling minutes from Centraal Station – and it’s worth finding. Down a side alley, De Compagnon seats just 35 diners over three floors with windows and doors that open onto the water of Damrak. Small it may be, but the effect is light and airy, comfortable and cosy. Bert van Buschbach is in the kitchen, creating traditionally-styled French/Burgundian cuisine while Sara van Buschbach’s domain is the front of house and the superb and celebrated French wine list. Meeting facilities are terrific: a private room seating up to 12 and a wine cellar that can accommodate parties up to 20. Private dining here means your own waiter and chef too. Dishes include starter of salad of sautéed scallops crumbed in dried ceps, main course of whole fried guinea fowl with creamy truffle sauce and sliced fresh truffled (for two) and red fruit with curds and red fruit sorbet for dessert. Of the 300 wines, about 200 are listed at under euros 50, with a very nice selection of half bottles.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
