I wouldn't advise making a beeline for this place, as it's a bit off the main drags in Bern, but if you happen to spot it, why not have a bite. There is pretty hearty food but standards... not anything that will amaze or tantalise you. Service was very friendly and helpful.

Centrally located Schmiedstube is a really nice find in central Bern. Sometimes it can be pretty tough to get a table in this small city, but I usually have good luck here because it's quite large, and a bit hidden between two main streets. The price-to-value ratio is really good for Bern. The dining room is just great, with about... More

The big plus with this restaurant is that it's fairly central, but the food is uninspired. I had a sad little bowl of mushroom soup today, followed by a bland entree, with stale bread on the side.

We were here on Friday evening for dinner, and despite that the city was quite crowded, had no problem finding a table. It seems there are less the young people going for dinner, and it was no problem to have a conversation without shouting. The meals were brought quite quickly, we ordered the Cordon Bleu and the escalope of venison,... More

Well located in central Bern. Good range of options on the menu, good service, reasonable price, and great for coeliacs. If you need gluten free then ask for the gluten free menu - it has lots of choices and the staff were knowledgeable and very helpful.

We had a full afternoon of walking, having taken the train from Geneva in the morning, and were looking for a nice restaurant serving Swiss German meals. We stumbled on this place, which is tucked behind the Anker Restaurant near the clock tower (Zytglogge) tram stop. The menu was great, as was the service. We appreciated a candle on the... More

Travelling on a day trip from geneva with my in laws, my fil refused to got to any venue which looked "touristy" for lunch. Even though it is in the old part of town, that part of the building is clean and new and spacious. We chose the Schmiedstube because all we could see was patrons who did not look... More

Decent portions, good taste, but not cheap. There are sufficient alternatives around for better food and better prices

I dined here on a Friday evening. It was half full but there was no buzz and no atmosphere to speak of. Schmiedstube was not my first or even second choice but the restaurants I wanted to try were full so Schmiedstube it had to be to appease my hunger.... My watercress soup was outstanding, served with a skewer of... More

We ate at the Schmiedstube on a Saturday evening. It was almost empty, that should have been a warning sign. We were able to order quickly, when asked for a wine recommendation, the waiter picked the most expensive white wine (which was ok, but not great). The food arrived quite soon. One dish was a trout with rice, which was... More
