We ate here twice, once alone, once with friends. The food is amazing, but what was unparalleled in Florence is the dining experience at Osteria de L'Ortolano: it is like being served a formal dinner in a home. The dining area is intimate and cosy, and the service is gracious, warm, and attentive, yet unobtrusive. This is both the perfect... More

My husband and I were in Florence with our adult daughter who is a private chef in New York. She recommended eating dinner at Osteria De L'Ortolano. It was truly the best eating experience of our trip to Rome and Florence. The Cordon Bleu trained chefs at the restaurant prepare the most amazing dishes that are quite reasonably priced. We... We did not have reservations, but the staff was kind and seated us anyway at a beautiful table outside. The pasta....is just beyond words. What a wonderful experience!!

We stumbled upon this fabulous restaurant on a recent visit to Florence. It is charming and the Cordon Bleu-trained chefs are amazing. Their passion for food and creating both delicious and artistic meals is very palpable. This is truly a gem and should not be missed.

We came across this spot when we were looking for a good place to eat near our hotel close to the Duomo. As vegans, we were surprised and delighted with their options and the lovely presentation by the Le Cordon Bleu-trained chefs. This was as good as or better than any vegan eatery we have visited in the US and... More

Just a block or so north of the Duomo is this small restaurant and cafe that looks like many in the neighborhood. But wait until you see the food and the flavors. We started with appetizers of sea bass cervichepaired with shaved, pickled fennel and a vegetarian dish of veggie flan with carmelized onions in a fresh pea puree. All... More

Very un touristy even though it's located within a high tourist area. When we visited a number of locals were shopping. Service was friendly and effiencent and the food and coffee excellent. It was a charming little establishment.

A cute and cosy family run osteria, with great selection of cheeses, cold cuts and lunch dishes for around €6-7. Wine selection is well presented, especially the tasting offers

I ate here with my wife and daughter during a 3 night stay in Florence and we were not disappointed by the food - the range of dishes was superb. None of our party spoke Italian and the host only spoke a little English but we got by and had a lovely meal. If you want everything explained in detail... More

Although located in a very touristic area, this restaurant is completely off the charts in terms of value, service, and food. We went there two evenings in a row with my wife, and both times had a great experience. The service was so nice that it felt like being at home, or at our mother's home. It is obvious that... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The pleasant atmosphere of this residential area, a stone’s throw away from the Duomo of Florence, surprises everyone. A continuous flow of backpacking students provides the tranquil surroundings for the elderly residents who sit in Piazza San Marco to read the daily newspaper. Home to several universities, including the Academy of Fine Arts, San Marco is one of the most vibrant cultural centers in the city. A bridge connecting the modern cultural activity of Florence to its classic art, represented by the everlasting magnificence of the original David, resonates as a symbol of Florence and of Italy as a whole. Get lost in a Neoclassic world, a journey back in time through historic buildings like Spedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents), San Marco church, Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, and natural jewels like the Botanical Gardens.
