Typical Sicilian menu, we opted for a simple meal. Shared calamari friti, each had Pasta Norma and sautéed spinach. The fish tasted very fresh,the pasta had too little eggplant,the spinach delicious. They ran out of decaf coffee! Dessert was just OK. Service was pleasant. Conveniently located with outdoor seating.

2+ hour wait for simple fish dinner

We were seated at 7:50 pm. First course (pasta) arrived with no problem. Then we waited ... and waited ... for the fish course. It arrived after 10 pm. It was good, but long wait was inexcusable, in my view. Atmosphere was throwback to 50s, which was OK, but I would never go back.

Rustic style restaurant

This is a good traditional style trattoria where it helps if you speak some Italian as the staff don’t speak much English. We had a starter of local cheeses and cold meats and our main courses were salads all of which were fantastic. The beer and wine cost less than any of the other restaurants we visited in Palermo. Very good value for money and great service.

Charming Decor, Disappointing Food

We spotted this restaurant while walking around the city and as it looked very authentic and interesting we came back later for a lunch. There was nothing actually bad about the food but it was rather dull and expensive compared to our other meals while in Palermo. The sauces were ordinary, it just didn't have the 'zing' we found everywhere else.

Excellent honest food at good prices

I’m not sure what the people who wrote the reviews saying this place is bad value for money would expect to pay for freshly cooked food in a handsome environment - this isn’t the Pizza Hut all-you-can-eat buffet, you know. I found the food to be of superb value, and the menu to be reassuringly short. If it’s on the menu it’s because it’s good, and it’s good because it’s fresh. They also have a lovely wine list with prices from a low as €14 a bottle which would buy you a glass of wine in New York, and a cork from a bottle of wine in London.

Poor food quality and service - Trattoria al Cancelletto Verde

We tried the clam and mussel saute and grill sea brass. There were just several pieces of clam and mussel in the plate. The fish was also very small. Certainly, the taste was not good. They charged coperto + service charge. The service was very bad. Will never come back.

Pricey for no reasons

Eating bad food in Palermo is really really difficult. Also costs are always reasonable, and in general not high. Al Cancelletto Verde managed to be pricey and bad at the same time. 70 EUR for 2 pieces of rolled stuffed aubergines, a poor portion of fried squids (a starter priced 12EUR itself, you pay less for the same in London), 2 mains and half bottle of wine. I'm happy to pay expensive food, if that brings high quality and originality. But a tourist trap like Al Cancelletto verde should either review its prices or its food. I'm Sicilian, I lived in Palermo for many years. I know what this city and its restaurants are capable of. Definitely more than disappointing locals as well as tourists.

Wonderful fish!

I ate the fish Sea Bass and it was delicious. Friendly staff! Esp the owner who knew English quite well. The menu is in Italian/English so it's easy to understand. My boyfriend ate the pasta with blue fish which was good but not as good as my fish.

Great food in a local atmosphere

We ate twice here. Inside and outside. Food great and a very local feel to the place. The Owner was very friendly and chatted during the evening. Would recommend. Small size, limits numbers.

We had salted Branzino and Branzino alla giotta as main courses. They were both done to perfection. Owner Angelo chatted with us and took our pictures. The Cannolo was one of the best one I had in our trip.

Perhaps it was because we were in a group of nearly 30. Whatever, dinner here was not good. Terrible, dry “antipasti”, an OK pasta, hopeless veal escalope with glutinous sauce and an indifferent sweet and dry farinaceous dolce did make for a satisfactory meal. Perhaps the tour was being cheap. Perhaps the restaurant. Perhaps both. Good local wine.

Hidden gem next to Politeama Theatre in Palermo. Great food and service. True Sicilian! We had spade fish with pistachio and the typical cannoli for dessert.
