Venetian cooking is not what I expected. What we experienced was completely different from traditional Italian food. At this restaurant I chose liver and onions, and it was fabulous. My sister had the lasagne - and it had no noodles. She said it was the best she had ever eaten. The desserts were heavenly.

I have nothing but good things to say about this place! We arrived at the restaurant and didn't have a reservation so the owner was nice enough to give us a table outside. The food was amazing (make sure to try the zucchini flowers and the parmigiano con aceto balsamico for hors d'oeuvres) For the main course my father ordered... More

Ate in here on my 45th birthday (Easter Monday) This was at the end of a 4 night stay in Venice where we'd generally eaten well but hadn't had many "wow" moments not necessarily felt we'd got value for money (with the exception of lunch on Easter Sunday at L'Ombra de Leone) That certainly wasn't the case at Oliva Nera... Tried this based on trip advisor reviews and wasn't disappointed. Had a special for the pasta course and it was fabulous ( Rabbit with chocolate pasta ). Main meat course was OK and pudding was excellent . A load of choice . It's quite small so would book but worth it

Nice atmosphere in this small restaurant, the lady in charge was formidable but very likeable! We had some delicious stuffed and fried courgette flowers to start, followed by cuttlefish with polenta and an impressive fritto misto di mare. We were going to miss dessert but the lady illustrated our options on a large piece of paper so we were 'persuaded'.... More

This Osteria was recommended by a friend earlier in the day and we happened on it almost by chance. It is tucked away but on a direct route from Vivaldi's Church where we had been. At 9.45 they gave us an outside table, not warm but a shawl for my wife! The zucchini flowers were a heavenly starter followed by... More

This restaurant was recommended by the hotel concierge. Although we did not have a reservation, the manager accommodated us but informed us we had to be done in an hour and a half due to a prior reservation they had accepted. We knew this was more than enough time for dinner which we had this evening. The lasagna was superb... More

Excellent service and fantastic food...this little place was right across the street from our rented apartment and a good friend knew the owner and made reservations for us. We had a lovely time and I used the visit to try cuttlefish and polenta with ink sauce...so glad I did! Totally recommend!

Tucked away off the beaten path of tourists you will find this wonderful little gem of a restaurant. We can't say enough positive things about Oliva Nera. The food was excellent the service on a level we have not experienced anywhere else in Venice and the atmosphere very romantic. The Baccala con polenta is a MUST TRY as is the... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
