We were celebrating our 20th anniversary and came upon the restaurant as it had open seating by the canal. We had the most romantic table for two overlooking an intersection of canals and enjoyed watching the foot and boat traffic. Best minestrone soup and pasta we enjoyed while in Venice. We would highly recommend!

In a city of over-priced tasteless food, Ai Barbacani makes a nice change for those in Castello. The fixed menu represents good value for money. Whilst the food was nothing special, it was better than than the Venetian average. What sets Ai Barbacani apart, aside from the reasonable price, is the service. Complementary prosecco on arrival, a nice grappa to... More

Finding a special restaurant for my wife’s birthday was difficult when you have never been to Venice before, so I had to rely on Tripadvisor. I wanted something romantic and not touristy and I was delighted with my choice of Ai Barbacani in the Castello area just behind Santa Maria Formosa square. It was in a quiet alleyway in a... More

Smallish, two roomed restaurant.Nicely cooked dishes, especially their steak, and pistachio mousse dessert. Well priced wine list; friendly service; good ambiance. One usually needs to book ahead; 100 euros or so for 2. So much better than the run of the mill restaurants lining the Venice streets, and at pretty much the same price. Recommended!

My partner and I visited this wonderful little restaurant last week for our anniversary. I had too booked in advance as I wanted to book the table overlooking the canal and given the occasion I thought this would be romantic. I emailed the restaurant who shortly after confirmed the booking. Unfortunately, the evening we visited it threw it down with... More

Closest restaurant to our hotel. Passed it 2 evenings and always busy. Went on third evening and great service and food. Immediately on sitting a welcome glass of Prosecco each. Cover charge of 3 euros per person but this also includes fresh bread, warm bread sticks and a complimentary Limoncello after. Food well presented and an excellent aI Barbacani fish... More

Traditional Italian resto in pleasant surroundings in the Castello quarter. Nice atmosphere, reasonably good food & wine, friendly service. Reliable after a day's sightseeing.

Service just fine. However, food was very good. We shared the mixed seafood antipasto with a variety of pickled fish, bacala pate and octopus salad. All very good but the sardines were the best. The seafood risotto was very tasty too. Only thing is it has to be ordered for 2 persons. The panna Cotta was very good too. There... More

Sauteed clams and mussels, came up in a big bowl of salty water with halved tomatoes, no onions garlic or anything, truly vile. There were 2 German couples there who also complained about everything including the wine.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
