What a great find! The outdoor seating was so romantic and cozy, with plants and trees along the borders. The service was fantastic, as were the wine and food! We had risotto and sea bass which were equally tasty. Highly recommended!

This was a hugely disappointing meal tonight - the only saving grace was the perfect service of the highly experienced staff, all of whom were respectfully attentive. Under-cooked pasta and over-cooked Red Mullet made this a disappointing end to our trip. The manger respectfully reduced our bill - but if only the food was up to the standard of service... More

Dear Stephanie C, first of all thank you for the kind words regarding La Caravella staff and for appreciating their professionalism. I’m sorry if the red mullet was over-cooked, we would have been at your disposal if you had told us the problem. I’m also sorry that you didn’t enjoy our 'Calamarata pasta from Gragnano, gurnard ragout and nettles'; it... More

We were really looking forward to dining at this establishment after reading so many good reviews. I'm not sure if we were just there on an off night, but our experience was very poor, and with only a few meals in Venice during our short stay, I was sad we did not dine somewhere else instead. Our food looked pretty,... More

Dear Sharon H, I am sorry that your dinner at La Caravella haven’t met your expectation. Our restaurant proposals are mainly based on fish plates, specifically the spider crab and the scampi are among the finest and delicate raw materials, both in taste and preparation. Concerning the ‘Ravioli with scampi, saffron and julienned vegetables’ and the ‘Thin pasta noodles with... More

Beautiful garden restaurant, lovely, accommodating service and delicious food. Ate there early before the Opera and was treated graciously.

Hey local gave us the name of this place as good seafood, nice atmosphere, that was close to St. Mark's. The waiters were very attentive and pleasant. The food was presented beautifully and delicious. We had the first of the season artichokes and excellent asparagus risotto. The wine by the glass was excellent. It was relatively expensive around €50 each.... More

We dined here on a rainy evening, and the wooden interior, with candles at every table, was perfect. Food was surprisingly modern, wonderfully plated and delicious. The menu is heavy on the fish (appropriately) and the seafood risotto was memorable. There's a lively bar area adjacent.

We were 'fitted in' but still got a table by the window so we could people watch both inside and outside. The food was outstanding and the waiting Staff delightful. The Head of the dining room was charming and added to the atmosphere. We would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to everyone

In our two week stay in Venice we dined at La Caravella four times. The pasta in anchovy sauce was terrific and the tirami su was spectacular. We shared one on our first visit but each ordered our own thereafter. The service was remarkable and we were made to feel very much at home. A bit expensive but if you... More

We ordered the Risotto for each one of us and a large salad to share. The bread and the whipped butter was really good. The Shrimp scampi Risotto was good as well but it was not very hot. The portions were small and for 25 euro, it was not good value. Overall, the service was very good and the food... More

We felt the prices were very high although you are pampered and taken good care of and the staff are very attentive. Its not very big and you are rather squashed in. The menu isn't extensive. There are so many places to eat there in our opinion you can get excellent food at other places for less money.

Dear flexible, many thanks for your comment; I really appreciated your words concerning our staff, especially our qualified maître, sommelier, and waiters, which have been working here for a long time. Description
La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the newly-restored La Fenice theatre, just a few paces from the Piazza San Marco. Stepping inside, you will feel as if you have entered an antique sailing ship, with dark wood paneling, capstans and ropes and leaded windows. In summer, you may not step inside at all as La Caravella moves into a flower-filled courtyard complete with original wells, or the lighter courtyard dining room with typical Venetian ambience. The menu is typically Venetian too, with dishes like classic saor, marinated sardines with onions, pine kernels and raisins, fish soup, or oven orast turbot with potatoes and olives. In addition, the chef uses fresh seasonal ingredients to create trendier fare. The excellent wine list features both historical wine producers and smaller boutique vintners. Planning a party? La Caravella welcomes wedding receptions, private dinners, banquets, corporate entertaining, even coffee breaks. The garden seats up to 65 and one of the dining rooms up to 75.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
