We found this lovely little spot by chance on our first of three nights in Venice. The waiter was friendly and had a great sense of humour, especially at our poor attempt at bad Italian. We were recommended a thoroughly good local red wine and then proceeded to eat our way through four fabulous courses. The Burrata was beautifully creamy... More

Had a really great meal here on out first evening in Venice. Place was recommended by friends and is tucked away in a quiet part of Cannaregio. Menu was interesting with 6-7 starters and first courses to choose from and around 10 main courses. Not huge but quite enough choice. We went for the Slow cooked warm octopus salad and... More

There are so few restaurants in Venice that cater to locals (because there are so few locals these days). Al Cantinon feels like one that does, or at least one that has stayed true to Venetian methods. In a word, it feels authentic. And it's down a side street away from the river of people. If you're just two people,... More

Our hotel recommended this small, very worthwile Osteria. It is in a quiet part of Cannaregio right beside a small canal. It has perhaps 10-12 tables so we suggest your hotel help make reservations. I believe the restaurant is family owned. We could glimpse the kitchen from our table and it was immaculate. I was dying to watch them prepare... More

I wandered in late one evening and was able to snare a table. I enjoyed everything about this place. The food and service were both first rate. If you are planning a nice night out in Venice, make this the spot.

Very nice place for your last evening in Venice. The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. There are just a few tables outside under a gallery next to a small canal. So make sure you have a reservation. Enjoy your dinner and fantasize about the dilapidated buildings on the other side of the small canal, which once... More

We were recommended this small restaurant by our hotel as we wanted somewhere special for a birthday meal and it did not disappoint. Lovely atmosphere, friendly helpful staff and the food was delicious. The price was on a par with other restaurants in Venice that were far inferior. It is off the main drag so you are not likely to... More

We ate here twice during our stay. On our first visit, the restaurant was very quiet and so the waiter spent plenty of time with us, advising us on what to order etc. To start, we had the octopus salad to share and then both of us opted for the black spaghetti with prawns and saffron cream. Both dishes were... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
