This was one of the best dining experience I had in Italy. If not my hotelier's recommendation, I would have never found and got into this smallish restaurant in the back alley. But if you consider to come, a reservation is must or you are likely to be turned away. This is based upon my observation at the front row... More

This place is really worth a visit if in the Cannereggio area. Great service and simply some of the best food we had in Venice. Our rule that any restaurant with an English menu is sub par was spot on for this place too. The staff will help with any translations required! Duck ragu was excellent and the asparagus lasagne,... I had high hopes given the reviews and the crowds outside the restaurant and at the bar. There are two rooms. The first room when you walk in has a bar which was packed and some tables. The second room is quieter and is the main dining room. I'm pretty convinced that they put the tourists in the second room... More

Some friends HIGHLY recommended ai Promessi Sposi and it didn't disappoint. We made a reservation the night before (highly recommended!) for a sit-down dinner, but you can also have cicchetti & drinks at the bar.

We came here several times during our 4 night stay just opposite this place. We never intended to have a sit down meal as we only wanted a few quick drinks and some chichettas for nibbles. I'm usually quite tolerant and never given 2 stars but this place is disappointing considering it's previous reviews. I found a couple of the... More

This place was recommended to us by our Italian hosts and it did not disappoint. I ordered their liver which I am a huge fan of in general and it was one of the best I have tried. The atmosphere was great and food was good too.

Nice Restaurant, worth a visit. Prices are average, not very expensive. Food is very tasty, staff polite. If you stay at the bar, you should try some cichetti, and a glass Frizzante, which costs € 1,20!!!!! Taking a glass of this Frizzante is worth a visit.

We got there about 15 minutes before they opened and were able to get in even without reservations. I think we got lucky in that regard and would recommend calling ahead. Once we got seated a waitress came over and helped us with some of the Italian on the menu. We started with some steak tar-tar, which was fantastic. We... More

After reading the amazing reviews and waiting outside the door for 45 min for them to open I was disappointed that the staff was pretty unfriendly. We went with our two kids and I'm not sure if they didn't like tourists, tourists with kids or just our American accents. They seemed annoyed we didn't have reservations, and said they could... We visited this restaurant after reading all these good reviews in TA, and after passing by and noticing that lots of locals were drinking wine outside the premises. As it turned out the place is yet another tourist trap that serves mediocre food and is full only by tourists. We had the mixed starter which was full of (best case... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
