This was the only "fail" of all the restaurants we went to in Italy. It was recommended by our hotel, and the other recommendations were very good. Not so with this place. We did have reservations and arrived on time. The environment was just okay. The lighting was a bit bright for dinner and I had an extremely uncomfortable chair,... More

A Venetian friend recommended the Ribot one evening after a session at the University - but we were disappointed, as the food we ordered took so much time, the owner was a bit unfriendly, and my plate - Risotto al Pesce - was just plain normal - nothing exciting. You can find better options nearby - look where the people... More

Hummed and hahed about this place. It is in a usually very reliable guide but looks a bit beyond its prime. Sadly that was the case. Nice garden setting through the back but there were two big tables of American tourists in and they got most of the owner's attention leaving one poor waitress - not Italian - to handle... More

Mixed feelings after visiting Ribot - perhaps the difference between expectations based on Michelin listing and the reality was too high. The garden setting is very nice, so were the meals - well, the branzino came with skin charcoal baked... The evening which still might be quite nice was spoiled by a totally uninterested service, the staff were just bringing... More

My friend and I went out on a Friday night with out a reservation in Venice and found this restaurant available and we were causing but they had a simple and intriguing menu. We ask for a wine list they said they didn't have one but showed us an wine list and explained that the ran out of most of... More

Nice place, our server was overwhelmed because the 2nd server had a car accident and couldn't come. Penne salmon was nice, and is far enough for 1 person. I recommend this place.

We should have walked out when we asked for a wine list and were told they didn't have one ("We know what we have; what do you want?"). And it was downhill from there: lazy, inept service. Why it is mentioned in Michelin I'll never know. Suitable for tourists who think tiramisu is exotic.

Wonderfully authentic Venitian food in the 'indoor garden'. Great staff, but allowing people to smoke indoors (in Venice people can't smoke in a restaurant, but can outside of one) damaged the experience a little for us, as even the best food is not so good with people blowing smoke over your table and we were near some exceptionally rude people.... So the food was edible but mediocre, but the service was irritatingly slow. After an hour and a half for two courses we waited 45 minutes until we flagged down the waiter and asked for the bill. At no point had he looked our way, offered dessert or coffee,or anything. It's awful when you have to beg to pay so... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
