We went in for drinks and a snack to see how it would be for dinner. The waiter was slow and sullen. The scallops we ordered had obviously been frozen on a shell and had more dry breadcrumbs than scallops. The red house wine was very rough. It had a cover charge. For 2 drinks and the one appetizer it... More

We had dinner here one evening. Prices were average and the food was great. We had wine and pizza and then coffee. They brought us a basket of all kinds of breads, rolls and bread sticks. The service was great and the owner was fabulous, giving us the details of what his specialities were.

I'm always sorry to write a bad review, but I think it is so helpful for others that I feel in a way it is a responsibility to do so. I'll try, though, to be objective and just describe the experience as it went. So we went into this place without reading any reviews,we just liked how authentic it looked... More

We stopped here for a drink and a bite since it was close to where we stayed. The server seemed a little annoyed that we were tourist. We ordered margarita bites and it was a piece of toast that was very dry wiyh some salty sauce and cheese. Then we ordered pasta with clams and pasta carbonara. The carbonara was... More

We loved the casual feel of this trattoria. Great background rock music, godfather waiters and sublime food. It was not too precious which we liked. Laid back informality with affordable food. Seabass was superb as was veal. Well done chaps.

We discovered this delightful restaurant quite by chance wandering through Venice. We enjoyed a simple but delicious meal - delightful home made soups, great cheese and meat platter. Good wine selection and of course great Caffe. Hoping that my lifelong journey finds me back there some day.

Our first meal in Venice (and Italy, for that matter) after a long day of travel was here, and it did not disappoint. We shared a pizza and had some wine and it was a proper introduction for my girlfriend for her first taste of Italy. It was late on a Wednesday night and there were only a few other... More

Stopped here with my husband for a late lunch on a Sunday in spring. Very friendly & one of the best value restaurants in Venice we've been to without comprising on quality or portion (which is huge!). Terrible art work but my veal Milanese & my husband's fried seafood mix was tasty & plentiful. There were lots of Italian customers... More

We wandered into this restaurant by chance, enticed in by one of the owners at the door but we returned for a second evening because of the food and the staff. The first night we had the "tourist deal" and enjoyed two course meal with Penne and tomato sauce then a really good Pork and Rosemary casserole with Spinach and... More

This traditional Trattoria is just a short stroll from the train station. A little off the beaten track, which means it's less rammed with tourists and crowds than the restaurants near the station. Pizza was fantastic, and the house wine very good also. After a bit of research, it turns out that dunking bread in olive oil is an American... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
