Unassuming location, just opposite the ugly railway station of Porta Genova, but close enough to the Navigli area, is this traditional Milanese restaurant, with new management. The new staff are young, kind, professional; the ambience is elegant but informal, and extremely pleasant. The food was delicious (we had a choice of fish, meat and risotto dishes); the choice of wine... More

After wondering along the canal, we didn't find anything that looked good and then my partner saw this Restaurant kind of hidden from view accross from the tram track. We opened the metal gate to food heaven. If you are in Milan, try not to miss this culinary delight.

Dinner there was planned after a long business meeting and, while the area doesn't inspire and we were wondering where we were actually being taken, what a pleasant surprise it was to step into this classy little Italian restaurant! The not so extensive menu (probably changes regularly) offers classical dishes with a twist, which are delicious and beautifully presented. Service... More

The service is young and well mannered, the manager and the weighter were so gentle and smily. The food was good also, mixing tradizional and genuine ingredients in an unusual and modern mix. Promoted!

the quality of food is very high, I recommend the parmigiana melanzane as a starter I have to say that the scent in the restaurant was a little strong but apart from that everything was fine.

Service and interior was ok, but quality varied, some portions were great, some flops. Prices too high compared to quality.

We didn't have a reservation, but thought we'd take a chance on a gorgeous Saturday evening in May when the restaurants and cafes along the canal were packed. This restaurant is beyond "tucked away". There is a locked gate with a buzzer. The owner came by just as we were debating about pressing the buzzer and said he could seat... More

We were late arriving in Milan. No reservation in hand and a Monday night. Tried to get into one recommended restaurant, but it was booked. A person outside that restaurant when we asked desperately where we might find another good restaurant at this late hour said to try La Scaletta down the street. How fortunate we were! We found a... We walked by the La Scaletta, situated directly in Piazza Porta Genova, without even noticing it. The restaurant is hard to find, being raised half a floor above street level. I had to jump up to see through the windows. I spotted fancy bottles of wine and and was suitably impressed. To enter the restaurant, there is a door at... More

Description
La Scaletta is a restaurant with a long history and tradition. It has become famous thanks to the first woman chef Pina Bellini, who opened it in Milan, in front of the Porta Genova station in 1977. In 1983 it won two Michelin stars, then Pina Bellini left the restaurant in the early 90s. Since 2008, La Scaletta has gone back to the original name and charm, becoming one of the liveliest restaurants in the heart of Navigli. Big changes related to new owner welcome today's guests in a completely renovated environment that makes you feel at home. In summer, the beautiful garden is a surprise and is also the place to spend a unique evening, right in the heart of Milan. The cooking of La Scaletta glances at tradition, by revisiting and valuing it through a careful picking up of basic ingredients.

Staying in Navigli

Neighbourhood Profile
Navigli
The Navigli is part of historic Milan. In the ancient days, the entire city was linked with canals, similar to Venice. Today, most of the canals are gone, but the Navigli remains a canal-based neighborhood. There are two major canals: Naviglio Pavese and Naviglio Grande. The Naviglio Grande's bridges greet visitors at dusk with an amazing view. The Navigli district specializes in clubs, cafes, and vintage shops. Lifestyle reigns supreme here. You can start the walk from the Colonne di San Lorenzo, an antique colonnade in front of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. During the daytime, this place acts as a meeting point for artists and students reading books or chatting with friends; the nights turn it into a stepping-stone for club hoppers. Science lovers will also relish the opportunity to visit the Science and Technology National Museum Leonardo Da Vinci, showcasing inventions of the Italian genius.
