This is it! Touristy, crowded, and commercialized, it's still the one must-see central point in Madrid that can't be missed. There's always something going on at Sol! We saw acrobats, cartoons (Super Mario posing for pictures and selfies) and the Portuguese football team and their followers marching and chanting. This is also a good place as any to start your... I don't just like shopping,I live for shopping and this is just the place. Shops? Millions of them. Designer shops, souvenier shops, food shops, antiques, music, furniture. I could go on and on but I won't. Bars and restaurants are all lovely, take a seat, have a rest and watch the multi cultured world of Spains finest city. I can't imagine anyone going to the cinema when... More

Sol is the bustling place of Madrid. Lots of cafes, street vendors and access to the metro. We spent three days at a hotel in this location and it provides easy access to anywhere you want to visit. Wear a money belt, watch your surrounding and this will be a enjoyable location.

One of the sights of Madid - very busy - watch out for pickpocketing. Currently there some interesting street performers who act like statues.

This is where the action is. People walking around 24/7. Load, fun, great way to see the culture of Madrid. Worth spending some time just people watching.

This plaza was next to our Hotel. Lots of life - from magicians, to skaters, to a protest, singers - so much fun. Be sure to spend an evening here.

Very crowded, noisey, exciting and great way to see in the New Year eating a grape per bong of the large clock in Puerto del Sol. Marvellous atmosphere.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
