Word of mouth brought us here to the Cava Alta, a quiet peaceful parallel to the hustle and bustle on Cava Baja nearby. The locale is warm, cozy, very inviting, that kind of "Just what I was looking for!" surprise. The menu is best approached as "raciones", ie, plates to share. We ordered 6 as there were 6 of us,... We chose to make a reservation at Taberna Matritum based on other reviews and we didn't regret It. We made our reservation using their Web site and It worked great. Service was excellent and food was very tasty. The menu is reasonably priced and the wine list is quite extensive and not too pricey. Taberna Matritum is off the touristic... More

We went on a very quiet night, which meant that the restaurant lacked in ambiance, though it was comfortable and nicely appointed. However, this did have the advantage that we could talk a lot with the matire'd who had an extensive knowledge of local wines and provided an excellent set of paired wines for each of our meals. Food was... More

Having read the reviews we were expecting something pretty special but unfortunately it didn't deliver. Starting with the positives - the service was good and the bottle of wine that was recommended was perfectly pleasant. My scallop starter and my partner's croquettes were also both very nice. However, the T-bone steak that my partner ordered for the main was very... More

Went to Matritum twice during our 3 day stay in Madrid. The ceviche was out of this world. We also ordered the scallops which were cooked perfectly. The foie gras tapas were excellent as well, very rich. For dessert we got the creme brulee, which was ok and the second night we got a sorbet dessert. All the food was... More

Small and cozy restaurant in Madrid, quiet and tourist-free even though it is still very centrally located. They have a very large wine selection which is always nice, food is all right.

Amazing in season food, with menu recently updated and a great wine list. Service was brilliant, they spoke great English so was easy to communicate when my broken Spanish failed! Would visit again in a heart beat.

This is one of the best restaurants we have visited anywhere. The service was attentive and friendly and not overdone. The place is full of atmosphere and charm with lots of dark wood but not a dark place - more cosy and relaxed. The food was of such a high standard we could not get over it for several days... More

Visited on the basis of a recommendation from a Madrid native. The food was good, as was the wine, the service and the atmosphere. An excellent start to our trip. Well recommended.

Staying in La Latina

Neighbourhood Profile
La Latina
La Latina is a charming neighbourhood with two unique personalities. At first glance, it’s distinctly old-world, with narrow streets weaving a maze among charming stone buildings in sunny, bright colors like yellow and pink. The other side of La Latina is characterized by a young population and a bohemian vibe, as evidenced by a dynamic and evolving selection of new bars, shops, coworking spaces, and other businesses popping up in the area. In the northern part of the neighbourhood, the Cava Alta and Cava Baja streets constitute the tapas center of Madrid, where each age-old restaurant serves up distinctive specialties like huevos rotos and patatas bravas. Locals have come here for generations to while away hours over drinks and tapas with friends. On Sundays and public holidays, the streets to the south of La Latina metro station transform into a giant open-air market full of locals sifting through tent after tent of art, apparel, and antiques. Any day of the week, the intriguing blend of the traditional and the hip make the streets of La Latina worth exploring.
