We were here late September and visited twice since it was close to our hotel. Some fine wine and great seafood at reasonable prices. The menu is local and not modified for tourists, which was a welcome relief from the numerous franchised plastic paella offerings that abound in this locale. The service is sweet, not too hot on English, but... More

Looking for a seafood restaurant we found this bar/restaurant at 200m from us on TripAdvisor. A real gem. Wines by the glass: excellent, food even better. Only about 20 seats, so service impeccable. Great quality for money. Planning to go back before the end if our trip!

This little bar/restaurant was close to our hotel in the Santo Domingo area - great service - staff were very friendly and the food was excellent! Tapas was varied and the seafood choice was great - very fresh and served well. Visit here and be made to feel welcome - also a good chance to mix with the very many... More

Small cosy friendly a bistro type atmosphere with good food/wine in a tapas variety specialising in fish, not for children who have not got a varied taste, locals eat here so that says it all, we ate on a Monday night so no problem getting a table probably have to book at the weekends.

Our hotel concierge recommended Monje as a great fish restaurant and we wasn't wrong. It is quite small, with only a handful of tables but the food is exquisite. The guy who looked after us was brilliant. He let us taste wines before choosing our bottle and was totally open to serving us one item at a time so that... More

This is a lovely, small restaurant near the Royal Palace that we found near our hotel with the help of TA. The menu is heavy on seafood which was a nice change from other restaurants. We chose two raciones of calamari and fried anchovies--very tasty. Our waiter had a good suggestion on wine which we enjoyed. We had an additional... More

I love trip advisor, I'd never have found this charming little place without it! It feels really local - the waitress didn't speak English but tried really hard to accommodate me, finding me an English menu and choosing a wine for me since I couldn't read the wine list (when she let me taste it first I thought it was... Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
