We stopped here as the first stop on a tapas tour and it was one of my favorite stops. We were treated to sweet vermouth, very different from the dry vermouth in the states, and Jamon Iberico. Both were excellent!

I came here on a food tour and was introduced to Jamon Iberico de bellota from Joselito. Literally melts on the tongue and heavenly. The place has a lot of history and great artifacts, but the staff wasn't overly friendly and I can see how when it gets crowded it could be a very tough place for tourists to navigate... More

As part of a food tour, we stopped at Taberna Real as one of our tapas restaurants. We sampled the jamon (very good), but the stand out for me was the vermouth. I had never sampled vermouth before and this place really had a nice tasting. I would recommend you come here for a drink and sit outside and enjoy... More

Perhaps the best Jamón Ibérico that we enjoyed in Madrid, perfectly sliced. Make sure that you try the Campo Real olives, toasted bread with tomato salsa and their hand-made potato chips (fried in olive oil). The Caña is cold and refreshing, as is the Tinto Verano. However, as others have pointed out, do not miss the Vermut.

Stopped for a sit in the sun and a bottle of water. Setting was fine. But the water was more than a beer at other places.

Located on Plaza Isabella II, Taberna Real once quartered the servants of the Palicio Real, or so the legend goes. The best jamon iberico de bellota can be found right here. It is their mainstay tapas serving. The olives they serve with it are also wonderful Spanish olives. The sweet vermouth on tap is another reason why the locals frequent... More

We had been staying at the Intur Palacia hotel nearby and found this Taberna by chance. Situated centrally, it's beautifully decorated inside with authentically tiled floors and walls and timber ceilings. We visited the Taberna on about six occasions, it was so good. Service quick and all the waiters were so friendly, a real highlight of our visit to Madrid!

Terrible service with bad tempered and rude waiters. If you Just want to have some drink, food and good times keep away from this place. It's a real tourist trap.

We had Spanish sweet vermouth and tostadas with jamon iberico. Jamon Iberico is one of the greatest things I've ever eaten, and theirs was excellent. The restaurant has a great ambiance. It's apparently been around for quite some time.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
