We enjoyed dinner at Cafe Varela. Hubby ordered steal tidbits with padrón peppers. I had fettuccini Bologonese. We also shared a bottle of red wine. Staff was extremely friendly and attentive. After a little chit chat, our server left and returned with 2 glasses of champagne and some bonbons on the house! My hubby then ordered a glass of Port... More

Very friendly staff, good wine and tapas. Very good service - would highly recommend. We were staying at the hotel next door and wanted a local establishment, and this was much better than we expected.

We liked the menu they were displaying on the street, so we chose to go in and eat. It was the best service I have ever experienced in any restaurant in my life. Wonderful staff and great food. No problems getting glutenfree food and they were very flexible with changing the courses to make them glutenfree. Very kind and service... More

Attached to Hotel Preciados in centre of town. We were atracted to the English menu and amazed by the quality of service, food and wine. Excellent guidence of food and wine gave us a very enjoyable evening with bonus brandy at the end of the evening. We went back for a second evening.

Part of the Hotel Preciados so you pay hotel prices. The measures that you get are great though. I had a brandy and it was huge... perfect for a nightcap (or to get the party started again). Nice place to sit and watch the people go by. Great if you stay at the hotel.

Breakfast was great - can't disagree with the other reviewers on that at all. A wide selection of fresh fruit all well displayed - ready to plate and eat strawberries, ogen melon, kiwi, pineapple, papaya, orange & grapefruit - fabulous. I'm not a hot breakfast fan - but my husband is, and he enjoyed the fried egg served on bread... More

I visited Cafe Varela for the first two years ago. The service and the food was so amazing that I promised to come back next time I travel to Madrid. And this is what I did. Excellent meal! We had a marvelous surprise when we ordered the Paella. Despite the price (19 euros per person), it came with big shrimps and a lot of others seafoods. Totally recommend!

Although located in the tourist area, this restaurant offers good food at reasonable prices. The portions are huge, for example 'gambas al ajillo' (shrimps with garlic oil), while most tourist restaurants give just a few shrimps, here the dish was full of them. We ordered a few appetizers expecting the regular small portions and had trouble finishing them. The paella... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
