My boyfriend and I stumbled across this restaurant while looking for somewhere for dinner. It was hard to spot, as it is a doorway that leads underground. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the owner Marina is a delightful lady, who while has a small understanding of English definitely makes up for in enthusiasm. The food was to die... More

Thanks to a very close friend with great local knowledge, we had an absolutely great time at La Mazmorra, and being very well hidden just outside the Plaza Major, this was an amazing find!! The food was ecstatic, and very reasonably priced for the Center of Madrid, the nature of the building, with French, Judaic history was incredible. The room... More

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere like a medieval dungeon and the staff is very friendly and nice. The food is pretty good and extremely cheap. I recommend Tortilla de patata, pimientos de padron, and nice mix of cheese and ham.

If you want to experience an authentic Spanish evening with friends. You need to go to la Mazmorra. Great for tapas and a drink. It is an old dungeon and very great atmosphere.

Is a good place, quite beatiful, do you really feel like in taberna, the service and attention are incredible for Spain and Madrid one of the best I have been. Food is ok just for having some drinks and prices are low. We were more than 30 and it wasn't a problem

We went near the evening closing time, yet we were very well attended. The tapas and sangria were very good. Service was prompt and corteuos. It is an underground dungeon, scary at the begining, yet it adds to the atmosphere. Definitevly reccomend this place. A young crowd was having a good time close to us our table. The seats and... We went to La Mazmorra with a group of US students. The restaurant is underground and made to look like a Medieval dungeon. We had tapas which was a new experience for our students - at least the french fries pleased them. The rest of the tapas were average. However, the churros with chocolate were delicious. I would go back... More

Everything you could want from traditional Spanish tapas - meats, cheeses, and jars of sangria to wash it all down. The service was very friendly with the owner of the place coming in and chatting with us many times. The restaurant is Underground and has a medieval feel to it - very fitting to the area it is in in... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
