"El Gran Cafe' was one of the nicest places where we ate in Barcelona. A friend from Barcelona recommended it and you understand from the allioli's taste and the appetizers why. Everything was delicious. We had typical catalan starters like escalivada and another 1 also starting with an "e" but with codfish, then a marisc paella. You will surprise yourself... More

We had a nice evening here in this beautiful restaurant. The service was not 100%. It took rather long time before we could order ( We were the first guest this night). The food was perfect and the paperbag with bread was very tasty. We had our meals before the wine. Overall a nice evening.

We had a first class meal at this wonderful old restaurant. The food, wine and ambience were great. Our shared octopus cooked Galician style was delicious as was my duck, which was cooked to perfection. Similarly my wife's veal shank was excellent as was the bottle of Tempranillo. The only mild blemish was the service which was patchy. The welcome... More

After a few culinary disappointments on our Barcelona holiday we decided to try El Gran Cafe in the Gothic Quarter which we'd passed a few times during our stay. Despite it being a Thursday night there was a pianist who continued to play through our meal. The staff were attentive but not imposing and the decor was traditional but tasteful.... More

Impressive interior that make you feel as though you are dining somewhere special. Despite the surroundings, great value food can still be enjoyed. We had the 13.95€ menu. Tasty fideos (pasta) and even better omelette, followed by suquet de peix (monkfish and potato stew) and chicken in cava sauce, both very good. Not a great choice of sweets, but at... More

Situated in a relatively quiet area of the Gothic district, about 400m from the waterfront and 200m from the Ramblas. There are booths for 4 people in the center, window seating for 2-3 people, a large room for parties of up to 12-14, an upper mezzanine with different size tables and a downstairs banquet room for larger groups. We had... More

A well situated if not necessarily a great spot for "foodies". Gran Cafe is in the heart of the Gothic Barrio of Barcelona and a perfectly adequate halt for a bistro style lunch. The menu covers all the bases from sandwiches, omellettes, burgers to full plated meals in just about as many languages and traditions! Wine selection is okay, food... More

This is an old restaurant with beautiful woodwork. The restaurant was fairly quiet and the food good but the waiter tried to get us to order more food by saying that the portions were very small. They weren't small at all. An appetizer of ham and beans was very good. This is nothing like American ham and beans. The ham... More

El Gran Cafe is located at 5 minutes from the Ramblas and the Cathedral, in the center of the Barri Gotic. It is a beautifull restaurant with a real atmosphere (a pianist was playing when I came). The staff is efficient. The food is excellent : a large choice of tapas, starters, fishes and meat. The paella is very good.... More
