Great variety of traditional food at this cosy restaurant. I've seen a few critical comments about the service but I certainly didn't experience that, the waitresses were very friendly and attentive.

...it's one of those amazing places that take you to another city without even moving. The schnitzels are authentic HUGE at Alt Wien and they taste just perfect with the fresh cucumber salad and potato salad on the side. BTW this restaurant also serves the best ice cold beer in this Kiez. The service can be a little rough around... More

Came here for dinner, specifically for the schnitzel. It can get busy, so be aware of that. My husband and I each ordered the schnitzel, which seems to be the favorite item among everyone- we saw a ton of them come out the kitchen. We weren't absolutely starving, and the schnitzel is HUGE! Larger than the plate it was one.... More

This is a great little gem of restaurant with delicious food. The schnitzel is so big, it doesn't fir on you plate, so bring your appetite. That is obviously what we had and it was perfectly fired golden-brown and tender. My only regret is that we weren't starving when we went. I wanted to eat more!

I absolutely love a schnitzel and the one I had here was out of this world. First of all its size was somewhat intimidating. It was getting on for a foot across and easily larger than the plate it came on. It was the perfect schnitzel. Crisp, buttery and hammered extremely thin, so despite its impressive surface area it was... More

Food was very tasty, especially sauce. Red wine was also good and cheap. Staff was very reticent. Waiter didn't speak much.

Food was reasonably priced and very good quality. Service was a bit slow, we only had one round of beers, but we would have had more if our waiter had come to our table after the dinner had been served. Instead we had to ask for the bill after waiting 20 mins following our meal and we left shortly after.

Have eaten here a couple of times now and I have to say the food and beer is great ! Tucked away off the "main drag" it was recommended by a friend who lives nearby. I can highly recommend the Schnitzel- very thin and takes up more than the massive plate it is served on. Washed down with some local... More

Description
Fred Koller, well known in Berlin for his austrian cuisine, and his partner Sibylle Hassfurther opened the restaurant ALT WIEN in September 2010. There you will find the best Wiener Schnitzel or Tafelspitz, and also a menu of austrian specialities that changes regularly. We recommend Kaiserschmarrn and a Melange after dinner!

Staying in Prenzlauer Berg

Neighbourhood Profile
Prenzlauer Berg
No Berlin neighbourhood has undergone a greater change than Prenzlauer Berg. The artists and non-conformists that defined the district’s intriguing subculture in the 1980s and 90s have been replaced by a young, hip crowd that frequents the many cafes. Where there were once run-down houses in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, there are now designer shops. Beautiful old homes have been modernized and renovated, and on Sundays, thousands turn the park next to remnants of the wall into a playground for street artists, musicians, and flea market shoppers. This attracts young urban families who enjoy the balance of big city life and small-town comfort. Meanwhile, trendy, young, upper-class visitors from all over the world are attracted to the local high-end shops, cafés, and sophisticated bars and restaurants. The merits of this transformation are a favorite topic of debate around the city, but it makes for some of the best people-watching Berlin has to offer.
