Normally, I would leave what I have written in the past about Astrance. After all, nine meals is normally enough to form a balanced opinion. But there has been a change: For reasons they would never disclose, Michelin dropped Astrance’s rare third star in its 2019 listings. There must have been reasons. But assuming there were, it wasn’t evident to us in yet another flawless, spectacular late November lunch. The space is unchanged, perhaps except for more Asian clients and fewer American, but with 24 seats, one meal isn’t much of a data point. The service remains perfect; kind, formal, helpful, bi-lingual. The price of the 70€ lunch is higher, but with the wines rolled into the check total, it isn’t readily clear how much higher. The 2019 Michelin Guide says 95€. Believe me, it is a bargain still. The dishes are each superb, complex, but never weird or fussy. Three star or two, this is Paris’ best and most special restaurant and, naturally every seat taken. (Subsequent to this meal it was announced that Astrance will move to another address in the 11th. No other details disclosed.)

People who downplay this restaurant, need to learn the first thing about fine dining. Granted the setting is outdated, which is probably in part why Michelin demoted them to 2*. Just for the record: 2* Michelin is still categorised as being: worthy of the detour. Incredible is a better word. And then some. The consommé de cêpes infused with ginger and shrimp ravioli alone merited coming. The dishes were honest, of a skill rarely equalled (creating the celery root purée with Parmesan and truffle crème, the way it was presented, is work of an artist - and just plainly delicious.) Duck tart. Jeezes. Waauw. And the wines were all bold, unknown choices that paired immaculately. I haven’t had a dining experience in a long time. Move to Jamin, revamp the setting and get that 3* back. Parceque tu le vaut bien.

From beginning to end our experience at L'Astrance was superb. We came for my birthday dinner and the staff truly made me feel special and celebrated. The food was fantastic, some of the best I've had in Paris, and the wine selection for the pairing was on point. I'd recommend this place for anyone looking for a real fine dining experience.

Good, not great experience The menu is only in french, and worse, the staff make very little effort to translate or make you comfortable as you can’t read it. As such, i didn’t order wine or dessert, what’s the point My black miso cod is similar to what the hundreds of restaurants offer 7/10

We had an excellent dinner at Astrance on the 11th. Beautiful fish, beautiful salad--everything was light and first-rate. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Wine list was very good. We definitely want to go back.

Last night was my big birthday surprise and it was a whopper! This is going to be long but it is a romantic tale. I have always loved good food, but it was my partner Tom who introduced me to fine dining and he did it at one of the best restaurants in the world. In 2014, Tom and I had plans to go to Paris and he told me he wanted to take me to his most favorite restaurant…Astrance. But it was very difficult to get into, and one has to make reservations months in advance. So on a trip to Portland, Oregon three months prior to our trip to Paris, Tom woke up at 2 AM and called Astrance for a reservation. Usually he said that by the time you get through there are no seats available but this time was different. They came on the line and asked him when he would like to come and he was floored. He told them the date and time and just like that, we had a reservation! This restaurant was ranked in the top 50 restaurants in the world…#18! So the night came and off we went to Astrance. Tom wanted to play a joke on them so we walked in as if we had no reservation and he inquired about a table. Of course they told us there were none. Then he told them his name and said we had a reservation. They looked in the Big Book and said yes you do but it is for tomorrow night!! Tom choked!!! The owner then winked at Tom and said right this way. Tom had told me this restaurant was not the typical French restaurant. He said the staff is charming, doesn’t take itself too seriously, fills the night with humor and makes every guest feel so special! I was so nervous because I had never dined in a restaurant of this calibre. But Astrance lived up to its reputation and made me feel so welcome and made the evening so easy. This was an evening I knew I would never forget. One year later, I took sixty singers from my high school Mira Costa on a choir tour to Paris and London singing in such venues as Notre Dame Cathedral, Chartres Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral…well you get the idea! This was a special tour so Tom suggested we go to Astrance again! After a long flight from LA and major jet lag off we went for our second evening to Astrance. It was as magical and romantic as the first. They remembered us and treated us like family. The evening was a culinary family reunion! The food as delicious as it was gorgeous! A night to remember!!! Then I n 2020, we had heard Astrance closed because of COVID. It was like losing a best friend! I thought how sad. This was really very, very sad. So many memories and we felt like family…all gone. Fast forward to last night. Tom told me he had made rerservations at a surprise place for my birthday. So with our friends Angela and Jacob from California we took two Metro trains and then a short walk. Tom walked into a restaurant I did not recognize. As I walked across the threshold I looked down and there was a monogrammed carpet that read Astrance. I burst into tears! I looked at Tom and said I cannot believe you did this. It turned out Astrsnce had closed only to reopen in a new location with a much larger kitchen and a bigger staff. As we walked in to be seated, I wiped my eyes and pulled myself together. They welcomed us and another magical evening at Astrance commenced. The dinner was spectacular. The food was so creative and the service was given with their signature elegance and warmth. It was another movie-like evening at Astrance. Course after course made us swoon and gasp! The chef came out and we thanked him and I told him it was my birthday and that we had dined at the old Astrance. He was so delightful and endlessly thanked us. But one more thing happened. l requested for the owner to come over and I told him I had two questions. He came over and the first question was where can I get the tennis shoes your staff is wearing??? He laughed and told me online at Bobbies!!! My second question began with an explanation that for years and all day today I had been looking at Aguiole knives, a very famous French table knife. I looked at him and asked, “Can I possibly get a set of the knives we have dined with tonight and of course I will pay for them?” He looked at me and said yes this is possbile. He asked me how many I wanted and I told him six and he said he would be right back. He came back and said these are from my private collection and presented me with a boxed set of six knives that are engraved with the name Astrance. Tom and our friend’s jaws were on the floor and I was breathless and in tears. I thanked him profusely… merci, merci, merci! I shook his hand and well…was a mess!!! Tom really surprised me this year! It was a such a special night and brought back many memories of precious nights with him at Astrance. If you are ever in Paris and want a night you won’t forget, food that makes you pause with adoration and service that is like being with the family members you love…go to Astrance...it will last with you forever ❤️ M. Simply amazing! The service team helmed by Christophe was efficient and friendly. Food was sublime, especially the crackling on the roast suckling pig dish - simply divine!

Cold outside but lovely and warm for dinner ...beautifully decorated and stylish The tables are on 2 levels , reserve upstairs if you can ... downstairs the tables are disappointingly rigid in position with diners sitting opposite each other, but at least not too close Lots of smartly dressed waiters but still we had to ask for service several times, wine and water kept away from the table and not kept full. Obligatory fixed menu at €250 per person ! Waiters insisted on interrupting the conversation at every course which became annoying to us The food was very good however , particularly the meat dish and the desert , and the portions more generous than some at these nouveau cuisine restaurants. We really enjoyed it A fair white burgundy was at €110 per bottle I rather had the feeling that they are an example of very expensive restaurants who think a lot of themselves, but an enjoyable evening

A true lunch experience. We lost track of the courses during this two plus hours of excellent service, outstanding food and great wine pairings. We made the mistake of eating breakfast about three hours before. You need to go hungry or you might have trouble finishing.

Amazing balance of flavours using fresh seasonal ingredients. Service was spot on, attentive yet not intrusive. Sorbet was a unique twist but so delicious. Truffle pasta was perfectly balanced. Such a memorable dining experience here.

My third visit, two previous ones were lunch visits and pretty happy with those. But no !!! This is not what is expected. Something must have gone wrong. Had the full package, but sense that a few dishes never made it to my table. If a Michelin inspector would have been among the guests he or she would have left disappointed. The red mullet and grouse were very ok, rest below expectation. Wine ok, but not outstanding. Only one small glass of red wine however this Bordeaux with the grouse was a good match. No avec offered with the coffee. Had to ask waiter to close door as cigarette smoke came into restaurant. Strange that none of the waiters took action. Staff was friendly though, it was the food and wine that was disappointing and after all that is why I was there.

Astrance dropped from a 3 to a 2 Michelin Star Restaurant in 2019. I believe that they will drop even more if they do not vastly improve their quality and service. In Paris, there are so many restaurants that are so much better than L’Astrance, such as up and coming Alliance. L’Astrance offers only one menu selection which is totally different from when it was a 3 Star. The menu now only includes one starter, 4 ordinary courses, 2 desserts and a ordinary fruit plate. The starter was a plain foir gras sandwich and it was pretty dry. The first course was a mussel salad with coconut milk sauce, the second was mackerel and rice with white wine and vinegar sauce, the third was a single piece of chicken with some pear, and the last was two slices of duck with mushroom. The food quality and the wine paring was average. The duck was even a bit chewy. As for service, the staff was pleasant but did not explain the details of the dishes if you did not ask them. They seemed more focused on making a joke rather than answering your questions about the food. Our dinner finished in about 2 hours. My wife and I spent over $800 for the dinner. After dinner my wife had a upset stomach because something was not fresh. It was the worst Michelin experience we ever had. In my opinion it’s not worth it.

Our three-hour dining adventure at L' Astrance was everything that was promised: chic, elegant, understated, with the food being the top star in this Michelin-ranked destination restaurant ! The restrained interiors, set off by a few glorious floral arrangements, left the diner focusing on the amazing presentation of course by course brilliance.... The ' surprise' wine pairings were beautifully presented by the charming sommelier, and each dish of the evening was better than the previous one....served at relaxed intervals, as there is only one seating a night. A truly inspired evening.....
